The Women’s Ballon d’Or already has its undisputed queen. For the third year in a row, Aitana Bonmatí won the award given annually by ‘France Football’, surpassing on this occasion her former teammate at FC Barcelona Femení, Mariona Caldentey (Arsenal).
Despite the defeats with Barça in the Women’s Champions League final (1-0 against Arsenal) and the Women’s Eurocup (1-1, 3-1 p. against England), the Azulgrana star revalidated the trophy obtained in 2023 and 2024, surpassing what was done by the also culé player Alexia Putellas (2021, 2022).
The player from Sant Pere de Ribes was also MVP of the Champions League and the Eurocup, so there is not too much surprise with her third crown. Certainly, this year there was greater parity among the finalists, in a podium that was completed by the English player Alessia Russo (Arsenal).
Andrés Iniesta was in charge, on this occasion, of presenting the Ballon d’Or with which Aitana Bonmatí becomes the top winner of the award that, since 2018, has been given by ‘France Football’. After receiving the award, the 27-year-old player thanked Barça and the Spanish National Team for their unconditional support.
“Third time here consecutively, I don’t really know what to say. Incredible. Thanks to ‘France Football’, first of all for giving me the third one. It could perfectly have been any of you. I think there has been a great level this year“, began by saying the Azulgrana ’14’.
In that sense, she also valued the gesture of the organizers to, for the first time, equalize the awards in both categories (male and female), with winners of both genders in a total of 12 categories, with the exception of the Sócrates Award (humanitarian work).
“Equality is something we have been demanding for some time. Today we have achieved it. To Barça, to Joan Laporta the president and the board, teammates, staff… we don’t achieve this alone. It is thanks to a very large collective work. Thanks to Barça, the club of my life”, added Aitana.
Aitana Bonmatí, top winner of the Women’s Ballon d’Or
