FC Barcelona secured a resounding 6-1 victory over Olympiacos at Montjuïc, thanks to a remarkable display from Fermín López. The player from Huelva, returning to the lineup, repaid Hansi Flick’s trust by leading the Blaugrana attack as an attacking midfielder.

The ’16’ was initially expected to play on the left flank this time, given the presence of academy player Dro Fernández. However, Flick opted to move the youngster wide, giving the Huelva native more freedom to play behind Marcus Rashford. This proved to be a wise decision, as this is the role where the El Campillo native thrives.

Fermín López’s first career hat-trick

Barça started the match, once again, with some defensive uncertainties that forced Szczesny to intervene to prevent a goal. Fortunately for the culés, the opening goal came quickly, thanks to Fermín’s opportunism.

In the 7th minute, the Huelva native took advantage of a pass from Alejandro Balde to lay the ball off to Lamine Yamal. The ’10’ dribbled past two defenders as he entered the box, but goalkeeper Tzolakis denied his shot with a quick save. The rebound fell to Fermín, who capitalized by scoring into an empty net after following up on the play.

The 1-0 lead was a heavy blow for José Luis Mendilivar’s side, who also suffered the loss of Chiquinho to injury before halftime. In the 39th minute, a tackle by Pedri allowed Barça to recover a ball that Dro turned into a fantastic assist for López. The ’16’ received the ball unmarked at the edge of the box and slotted it past Tzolakis in a one-on-one.

In the second half, with Olympiacos already down to ten men, Fermín completed the first hat-trick of his career by finishing a great assist from the recently introduced Roony Bardghji. The Swede burst down the right flank and delivered a cross that the Spanish international struck first time.
