Lamine Yamal completed his umpteenth consecratory performance with FC Barcelona in Milan against Inter. Despite the Blaugrana defeat (4-3), the Mataró native once again clearly surpassed the ‘Nerazzurri’ defense for 120 minutes, where he was, by far, the best player of the match along with Yann Sommer.
And, if the ’19’ left the Giuseppe Meazza without goals, it was only due to the brutal interventions of the Swiss goalkeeper. In the 8th minute, the youngster created the first dangerous Blaugrana chance with a break down his wing and a backheel assist for Ferran Torres, which the ‘Shark’ barely missed.
In the 15th minute, Lamine tried again with a long shot, easily caught by Sommer. In the 36th minute, with Barça already behind on the scoreboard, the winger was unable to shoot comfortably with his right foot, after an assist from Dani Olmo. After the break, the Rocafonda native and the entire Blaugrana team would noticeably improve their performance.
In the 49th minute, Yamal claimed a grab inside the area by Bastoni, but the referee Szymon Marciniak did not sanction anything. Later, in the 68th minute, after several breaks down the side and fouls not sanctioned by the Polish referee, the youngster provoked a clear penalty by Mkhitaryan.
However, Marciniak reversed his decision inexplicably, after the call from VAR, pointing out the Armenian’s foul on the edge of the area. Although the contact started just under half a meter from the large area, the actual knockdown occurred on the line, so the referee’s error was egregious.
Despite the controversy, Lamine continued to do his thing: creating danger against a defense unable to stop him. In the 77th minute, the Blaugrana academy player took one of his now habitual long-range bombs, but Sommer shone with a spectacular stretch to prevent the goal.
Already in stoppage time, and with Barça leading 2-3, the youngster was about to settle the tie after a perfect Blaugrana counter-attack, but his low shot hit the base of the post. Inter seemed eliminated, until a goal from Acerbi in the 90+3′ sent the tie to extra time.
In the first part of extra time, the Italians regained the lead with a goal from Frattesi in the 99th minute. In the final 15 minutes, Hansi Flick turned the team to attack, already with Lewandowski, Gavi and Pau Víctor on the field. Again, all the danger of the Culé attack came from the boots of the Mataró native.
In the 106th minute, a cross from the youngster almost ended in a header goal from the Polish player. Afterwards, between the 114th and 116th minutes, there were two more great saves from Sommer, the first after a shot with spin that seemed to sneak in by the right post, and the second with another shot a little more centered and powerful.
The guardian of Inter Milan. The academy player managed to force a corner in the 119th minute and looked for it until the end, but finally Inter resisted to get into the Munich final. In total, Yamal was the leader in the match in successful dribbles (14), duels won (23) and fouls received (7), in addition to completing 44 of 58 passes (76 %) and 14 shots (5 on goal).
After the match at the Giuseppe Meazza, Lamine published a message on his Instagram account dedicated to the club and the Blaugrana fans. “We have given everything, this year it could not be but we will return, have no doubt, ‘CULERS’, we will not stop until we leave this club where it deserves, at the top”, wrote the winger.
In that sense, he added a historic promise that reflects his ambition and winning mentality, as well as the commitment to a Barça with which he will renew next July.
“I will fulfill my promise and bring it to Barcelona, we will not stop until we achieve it. But Sunday is another final and we must all be together. Visca el Barça!”, concludes Yamal’s message.
🔝Lamine Yamal and Barça’s second half, one to remember
