Broadcasts of football matches through illegal platforms reach historical figures in Spanish football.

The growth of piracy in sports broadcasts has triggered concern throughout the Spanish audiovisual sector. And with good reason, the increase during the first half of 2025 is exponential: a whopping 142%!.

LaLiga has published the data from the report carried out by the auditing firm Grant Thornton in collaboration with Live Content Coalition. In 2024, 10.8 million notices were reported for illegal broadcasts, and during the first half of 2025, the figure has skyrocketed to 26.2 million.

LALIGA PRESS RELEASE: “The detection of piracy in sports events and other live events reaches historical numbers thanks to the increase in resources and technology”

LaLiga also denounces that, despite the notifications sent, 89% of unauthorized broadcasts were not suspended and highlights that one of the major problems is the deficiency in response times from intermediaries.

According to the study, only 6% of the notices were addressed in the first 30 minutes, and 21% took more than two hours, making it impossible to interrupt the match in progress.

The report points out the great difference in results between DSPs and hosting providers and online platforms. The former show minimal effectiveness, with only 91% and 97% respectively ending in suspension.

Figures that contrast with the levels of effectiveness achieved by the platforms, with nearly 97% of the notices leading to suspension. However, the latter present another problem with no apparent solution: 90% of illegal broadcasts take less than 24 hours to reactivate.
