Hansi Flick’s FC Barcelona closed matchday 1 of LaLiga EA Sports 2025/26 as the sole leader, maintaining the position it held for most of last season.

Despite Real Madrid’s victory against Osasuna (1-0), the ‘culés’ retain the lead at the start of the season due to a better goal difference. The ‘merengues’ won by the narrowest of margins thanks to a penalty from Kylian Mbappé.

In total, eight of the 20 LaLiga teams started the 25/26 season by adding all three points. ‘Casa Blanca’, however, occupies the eighth position, being the team that obtained the smallest difference and number of goals in favor on the day.

The Brazilian’s goal came in the 7th minute, while the ‘Shark’ extended the lead in the 23rd minute, with controversy included. Towards the end, in the fourth minute of added time, Lamine closed the scoring with a bombshell from outside the area.

Atlético, a big disappointment of the first matchday

The matchday started on Friday with Girona’s defeat at home against Rayo (1-3) and Villarreal’s victory at home against the newly promoted Real Oviedo (2-0).

On Saturday, in addition to Barça’s victory, Alavés also added the three points, at home against the ‘culés’ next rival, Levante (2-1). Valencia and Real Sociedad, meanwhile, drew at Mestalla (1-1).

Already on Sunday, there were victories for Getafe, Athletic and Espanyol, with which a total of seven teams add 3 points, with a better goal difference for Barcelona (+3).

Espanyol’s victory, without a doubt, was the big surprise so far of the opening day. The ‘pericos’ came back against Atlético de Madrid in Cornellà (2-1) with goals from Miguel Rubio and Pere Milla. Julián Álvarez, with a free kick, had put the ‘colchoneros’ ahead before the break.

‘Aleti’ has spent 175 million euros on signings this summer, with up to nine incorporations. However, Diego Simeone’s team fails to take off and debuted with a tough fall on Catalan soil.

Athletic, meanwhile, struggled to defeat Sevilla at San Mamés (3-2). The ‘hispalenses’ came back from the initial goals of Nico Williams (from a penalty) and Sannadi through Lukebakio and Agoumé. However, Robert Navarro, nine minutes from the end, gave the victory to Ernesto Valverde’s team.

In Vigo, Celta was also surprised by Getafe. Javier Bordalás’ team took the victory thanks to goals from Liso and Uche. The matchday continued on Monday with the draw between Elche and Betis (1-1) and concluded with Madrid’s triumph at home against Osasuna (1-0).
