The classification for the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League keeps Arsenal as the leader of the league phase at the end of matchday 5. Real Madrid struggle in Greece before facing Manchester City

In Piraeus, Real Madrid narrowly escaped humiliation against an Olympiacos side that was disastrous defensively, but who almost salvaged a point at home against a Real Madrid team also overwhelmed at the back. Kylian Mbappé scored all four of Real Madrid's goals, three of them in the first half-hour.

Madrid fell behind in the 8th minute to a goal from Chiquinho, but turned the game around with a hat-trick from 'Kiki' in the 22nd, 24th, and 29th minutes. Taremi pulled one back for the home side in the 52nd minute, but Mbappé completed his four-goal haul in the 59th. The match seemed over until El Kaabi made it 3-4 in the 81st minute. After ten minutes on the ropes, Real Madrid salvaged a victory, their first ever in Greece.

Next week, Real Madrid will host Manchester City, now tenth in the standings after a surprising home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday. Atalanta (9th) closes out the top of the table after thrashing Barcelona's next opponent, Eintracht Frankfurt (3-0).

On Wednesday, Atlético Madrid also celebrated a victory (a dramatic 2-1 win against Inter Milan) as did PSV Eindhoven (4-1 win against Liverpool). The Dutch side deepened the crisis for a struggling Liverpool team, who were thrashed for the second consecutive match at Anfield. Earlier, Copenhagen struggled to defeat Kairat (3-2), while Pafos and Monaco drew in Cyprus (2-2).
