Chelsea FC and FC Barcelona will face each other again this Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League. Both teams have met on 14 occasions this century, with a very balanced record. So far, both teams have 4 wins each and 6 draws, with a goal difference slightly in favor of the Catalans (22-19).

In Stamford Bridge, the London team has been superior so far. **The 'blues' only fell on one occasion at home against Barça,** who also managed a couple of draws in seven visits to the historic ground inaugurated in 1877.

In that regard, on Tuesday, Hansi Flick's team will seek their second Barça victory at Chelsea's stadium, **the first in almost two decades**. The Catalans haven't managed to win there since the 2005/06 season, although valuable draws were achieved in 2009 and 2018

Leo Messi and Andrés Iniesta celebrating a goal against Chelsea

The last time Barça played at Stamford Bridge was on February 20, 2018, for the first leg of the round of 16. The team, then managed by Ernesto Valverde, went down with a goal from Willian in the 62nd minute, but Leo Messi equalized in the 75th. In the return leg at Camp Nou, the Catalans won by a landslide (3-0) to advance to the quarterfinals.

Previously, on May 6, 2009, a spectacular goal by Andrés Iniesta in the 90+3 minute sent Barça to the final in Rome. Essien had put the 'blues' ahead in the first half of a tie decided by the away goals rule, after a 0-0 draw in Catalonia.

The only victory for the 'blaugrana' team, for now, at the 'blue' stadium occurred on February 22, 2006. In the first leg of the round of 16, Frank Rijkaard's team came back from an initial own goal by Thiago Motta with another own goal by John Terry and a goal by Samuel Eto'o (1-2). The return leg at Camp Nou ended 1-1, and the 'culés' advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-2 aggregate score.

Both in 2006 and 2009, the results obtained at Stamford Bridge allowed Barça to head towards the Champions League title. This year, Flick's team is going for 3 points that will allow them to get closer to the TOP-8 which grants direct access to the round of 16.

In principle, the clubs need to overcome the 15-point barrier to have a chance of avoiding the playoff. If they win on Tuesday, Barça would reach 10 points with 9 left to play. Considering that Barça's last three opponents are, in theory, affordable (Eintracht, Slavia Prague, and Copenhagen), the team would take a key step towards qualification.
