A goal from winger Paulo Henrique Sampaio Filho, Paulinho, in the 100th minute (10' of the first overtime) allowed Palmeiras to advance to the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup. Abel Ferreira's team was slightly superior to Botafogo in regular time and, in extra time, sealed a 1-0 victory that makes them the first team to qualify for the round of the best eight.
The 'Verdao', with former FC Barcelona forward, Vitor Roque, in their lineup, took control of possession from the first half. However, the match lacked clear chances before the break, a product of the physical game imposed by Botafogo.
The current champion of the Copa Libertadores closed the match with 20 fouls and 6 yellow cards, the first of them before the third minute of the match. Colombian Richard Ríos was the one who tried the most for the São Paulo team, while Estevao and Roque barely participated in the attack.
Palmeiras awaits Benfica or Chelsea in the quarterfinals
With the score stuck at zero, they had to go to extra time to define the winner. In the 100th minute, Paulinho resolved the matter with a good individual play in which he left a couple of rivals behind to settle in and take a placed left-footed shot low, unreachable for goalkeeper John.
In the second part of extra time, Botafogo launched their first and only attack, but it was too late. Palmeiras held on to the lead on a very hot afternoon in Philadelphia and now awaits Benfica or Chelsea.
In the only European duel of the round of 16, the Portuguese team arrives as leaders of group C after surprising Bayern Munich on the last day (0-1). The London team, for its part, finished second in its zone after falling on matchday 2 against Fluminense (1-3).
With Palmeiras' victory, Botafogo becomes the first Brazilian club eliminated from the World Cup and the third South American team out of the tournament, after River and Boca (Argentina). Fluminense and Flamengo, the teams from Rio de Janeiro, will play for qualification against Inter Milan and Bayern, respectively.
