FC Barcelona is failing to receive a large sum of money, due to its decision not to activate the penalty clauses established in the contract with the Turkish construction company Limak, responsible for the remodeling works of the Spotify Camp Nou stadium.

In this sense, despite the notable delays accumulated in the execution schedule, the Catalan institution has preferred to maintain the commitment with the project operator without resorting to sanctioning measures.

The issue returns to the forefront after the Blaugrana team announced that the Joan Gamper Trophy will not be played at the Estadi on August 10 after the City Council did not grant it the First Occupation License, in addition to the possibility that it will have to play the first part of the 2025/26 season at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium.

Thus, when the club's president, Joan Laporta, announced the agreement in January 2023, he stated that for each day of delay the construction company had to pay the entity 1 million euros. However, that seems far from becoming a reality.

Barça sacrifices 202 million to maintain the alliance with Limak

At the time, the vice president of the Institutional Area of Barça, Elena Fort, stated that the return to the Camp Nou would be on November 29, 2024, within the framework of the club's 125th anniversary, unless something extraordinary happened that prevented it.

“If there is no pandemic or global catastrophe, we will be at the Camp Nou on November 29, 2024,″ she pointed out.

Evidently, that was not fulfilled and as of July 19, 2025, the exact date of the Camp Nou's reopening is still unknown and, taking into account the statements of the Blaugrana president, the Turkish construction company would accumulate a debt of around 202 million euros due to the daily delays. This figure is calculated from last November 29.

The reasons for the City Council's 'NO' to Barça

After the lack of concession of the indispensable requirement to certify that the work is in conditions to be used, Elena Fort highlighted that the main reason why the license was not obtained lies in the difficulties posed by the current schedule of execution of the works.

Likewise, the physical development of the works and the times that these entail do not allow to comply in a corresponding way with the municipal ordinances nor to advance in the administrative procedures necessary for the organism of the Ciudad Condal to grant the pertinent authorization for the reopening.

Finally, the vice president added that the club maintains active conversations with the competent administrative bodies with the objective of finding a legal and technical formula that allows the granting of the First Occupation License of the Spotify Camp Nou in the shortest possible time.
