The works at the Spotify Camp Nou are progressing rapidly to remedy the safety deficiencies detected by the City Council and the fire department in their latest inspection. A new visit from the municipal authorities is planned for this week, which involves completely stopping the work of the Limak Construction workers.
In that sense, given the delay in obtaining the first occupancy license for phase 1A, with capacity for 27,000 spectators between the Grandstand and the South Goal, the club could postpone the return to the Stadium until the works on the Lateral stand are completed, that is, phase 1B, which will expand the capacity to 45,000 seats.
The Champions League will only return to Spotify Camp Nou once phase 1B is completed
The reason for this decision is very simple: with phase 1A, it will only be possible to host LaLiga matches, since UEFA requires the Lateral stand to be enabled for Champions League matches. This is to guarantee the segregation of visiting fans.
In that sense, Barça would be forced to keep two stadiums open: the Camp Nou for La Liga and Montjuïc for the Champions League. The board has already confirmed the Lluís Companys as the venue for the match against Olympiacos, on Tuesday, October 21 (9:00 PM CEST), and will also do so shortly with the match against Girona, on Saturday the 18th for matchday 9 of La Liga (16:15 PM CEST).
For the Azulgrana team, the calendar marks November 2 as the date of the next league match at home (against Elche). After that, the club will not return home until the weekend of November 22 and 23, against Athletic. For the Champions League, the third match of the league phase at home will be against Eintracht Frankfurt, on December 9.
The Spotify Camp Nou Should Host 62,000 Culers in 2026
By that date, the board expects to have completed the works on the Lateral stand and to have the operating licenses that will allow the Sportify Camp Nou to reopen with 45,000 seats available. Afterward, work will continue on the North Goal stand to expand the capacity to 62,000 spectators in the second half of 24/25.
In Montjuïc, Barça can welcome 50,000 'culers'. In the worst-case scenario, the club has government permission to use the Lluís Companys until the end of February, if the reopening of the 'culé' temple suffers new delays.
