With just over two days to go before the match between FC Barcelona and Rayo Vallecano for the third matchday of LaLiga EA Sports 2025/26, alarms are going off at Camp Barça regarding Gavi, as he had to withdraw from training this Friday (August 29).
The midfielder was forced to leave early during a demanding work session held at Camp Tito Vilanova in the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.
The 21-year-old Spanish international experienced knee pain that prevented him from completing the training session, generating concern in the coaching staff, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Although initial assessments suggest that it is not a serious injury, the club has scheduled medical tests for the next few hours, with the intention of ruling out any physical setbacks.
Gavi, in doubt for the match against Rayo Vallecano
While we still have to wait for the '6' to undergo the relevant medical tests, it is very likely that, if he does not present any injury, the coaching staff, led by Hansi Flick, will decide not to play him against the Vallecas team.
The club remains calm, pending further medical check-ups. Gavi, so far this season, has enjoyed 66 minutes on the pitch (45 against Levante UD and 21 against RCD Mallorca).
It should be noted that today (August 29) marks four years since his debut with the Barça first team. His debut came at the hands of Ronald Koeman.
In addition, the '6' was included in coach Luis de la Fuente's squad for the Spanish national team. The 64-year-old coach called up 7 Barça players: Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Fermín López, Pau Cubarsí, Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres.
Knee injury, a precedent for Gavi
In this vein, Gavi's physical management continues to be marked by caution since November 19, 2023, when he suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, accompanied by an injury to the external meniscus, for which he had to undergo surgery and undertake a long recovery.
That incident, which took place during the Spain–Georgia match played at the José Zorrilla stadium in Valladolid, kept him away from the pitch for almost eleven months, until his reappearance on October 20, 2024 against Sevilla for matchday 10 of LaLiga 24/25. Barça won that match by a resounding 5-1 at home.
For now, it has not been confirmed whether the recent pain affects the operated knee or the opposite one. The club and the Andalusian player maintain a firm position that indicates that, at the slightest sign of injury, the priority is to stop, as they do not want to run any kind of risk.
