The president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, suggested that the Super League and UEFA are trying to reach an agreement in principle. The 'Azulgrana' team is a promoter of the new tournament and acts as an intermediary to bring the positions between the highest body of European football and the competition that would face the Champions League closer together.
Ceferin opens the door to dialogue with the Super League
In this sense, the leader of the Catalan team, in an interview with 'Mundo Deportivo', stated that the president of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, has taken a significant step by appointing a group of representatives of the entity to hold talks with the promoters of the Super League.
He also pointed out that the meetings are being held with Bernd Reichart, CEO of the Super League project, and his team, which includes legal advisors closely linked to the clubs that support the initiative. The approach marks a shift in the relationship between both parties, so far marked by confrontation.
In this way, from the environment of Barça they insist on the will to reach an understanding with UEFA, which allows to take important steps to turn the Super League into a reality.
The Catalan club is in an active position within the negotiations, promoting that the agreement materializes as soon as possible. "Are we interested? Definitely. It is positive that this approach is specified as soon as possible," Laporta commented.
The Super League, an improvement for European football
In this order of ideas, 'Jan' also emphasized that when Barça considered the idea of being part of the Super League, it did so with the intention of being part of a project based on meritocracy, in addition to the fact that it is a more profitable idea for the participating clubs if it ends up becoming a reality.
Likewise, he sees the initiative as an improvement for European football. Of course, he suggested that the reformulation of the Champions League format has yielded positive results.
And, in fact, according to Laporta, the competition has registered a 20% increase in its income compared to the previous model, which confirms that the adjustments made have had a direct impact on the economic performance of the tournament.
Despite this, the 'culé' president pointed out that the 'Blaugrana' entity can have weight to improve the format of the Super League, and that it can generate extremely high income, something that UEFA is aware of, which is why it is now showing itself open to the possibility of reaching an agreement.
