The draw of FC Barcelona in Getafe (1-1) intensified the free fall of the azulgrana team in La Liga. The team has only accumulated 39 points out of 60 possible, their second worst record of the decade

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The reality of FC Barcelona in La Liga 2024-25 is really difficult to explain. Despite the brilliant play displayed by the azulgrana team and their brutal offensive performance (53 goals in 20 matches), the team led by Hansi Flick has only accumulated 39 points from 12 wins, 3 draws, and 5 losses. Since the 2021-22 season (32 points), the team has not had such a poor balance at this stage of the championship.

This is the second worst mark for Barça in the last decade. Last season, with Xavi Hernández on the bench, the culés accumulated 44 points in their first 20 matches, keeping them seven points behind the leader, Real Madrid. The scenario could be identical if, on Sunday, the 'merengues' defeat UD Las Palmas at home (16:15 h). For now, there are four points of difference between the two teams; five with respect to the leader, Atlético de Madrid.

Barça began their free fall in the tournament on matchday 13, against Real Sociedad (1-0). The defeat at Anoeta extended a streak of nine consecutive matches conceding at least one goal, where the team has only managed to achieve two victories (3-1 in the derby against Espanyol and 1-5 against Mallorca), in addition to four losses and three draws, the last of which was on Saturday against Getafe (1-1).

6 points out of 24 possible: the drop that distances Barça from the league title

In this sense, the contrast of Barcelona between the start of the season and the last eight matches is brutal. The culés started with 11 wins and 1 loss (33 points out of 36 possible). However, after the draw at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, the azulgrana balance is 6 points out of 24 possible in the last eight matches. Such a drop can cost any team the championship.

In this regard, Hansi Flick lamented the drop in the tournament, although he is confident in the recovery of his Barça in the coming matches. "We have lost many points. We wanted to do better. I am happy with the start of the year, we started well. We have to show that we can continue that line," the coach pointed out in the press conference after the 1-1 in Getafe. The Catalans will return to action next Tuesday, for the Champions League, visiting Benfica (21:00 CEST).
