FC Barcelona's victory over Sevilla puts the title race in LaLiga on 'high alert'. The Catalans are just 1 point behind Atlético and only 2 behind Real Madrid.
The race for the LaLiga EA Sports 2024/25 title is on 'high alert'. The FC Barcelona had to secure all three points in their visit to Sevilla to fully enter the championship fight, and they delivered with flying colors. Hansi Flick's team left the Sánchez-Pizjuán with a resounding victory (1-4), which brings them dangerously close to Real Madrid and Atlético in the standings.
With this result, the Blaugranas now have 48 points, just 1 less than the Colchoneros (49) and only two behind the Merengues, who lead the competition with 50 points. With 15 matches still to play, the fight for the championship is more open than ever and the Catalans now depend on themselves to achieve their twenty-eighth League title.
This point difference between first and third place on matchday 23 is also the smallest it has been in LaLiga in 11 years. Back then, in the 2014/15 season, Real Madrid was leading at this stage of the championship with 57 points, followed by Barça with 56 and Atlético with 50, although ultimately it would be the Catalans who were crowned champions of the tournament.
Barcelona's calculations to take the lead
In the unlikely event that none of the three giants of Spain stumble again for the rest of the season, the Catalans would only need to win their direct encounters against the Madrilenians. In this sense, the weekends of March 15-16, when they will visit Atlético, and May 10-11, when they will host Madrid, are marked in red on the Blaugrana agenda, as they could play for the title in these two matches.
If two teams finish the season with the same number of points, the first tiebreaker is the goal difference in direct encounters, a factor that would favor Barcelona in case of a tie with the Merengues after the 0-4 in the Clásico at the Santiago Bernabéu.
However, with 'Atleti' it would be detrimental, as they won the first match of the season by a score of 1-2, a precedent that forces the Catalans to win the return match, if possible, by more than one goal difference. If the tie between both teams also remains in this regard, the next criterion is the general 'goal average', in which the Blaugranas enjoy a +38, much higher than the +23 of the Indians. LaLiga is on 'fire'.
