FC Barcelona and Real Oviedo face each other this Thursday, September 25 (21:30 CEST) for matchday 6 of LaLiga EA Sports 2025/26. The 'carbayón' team returns to Primera after 24 years of absence and will receive the 'azulgrana' team at the Carlos Tarttiere Stadium with the need to add points to get out of the bottom of the standings.

In that sense, Thursday will be the first 'culé' visit to the blue and white team since January 2001. For matchday 17 of the 2000/01 season, Barça, with Lorenzo Serra Ferrer on the bench, struggled more than expected to win by the narrowest of margins (2-3) in a match in which they went into halftime with a two-goal lead.

Patrick Kluivert and Rivaldo put the 'culés' ahead in the opening quarter of an hour. Kluivert himself made it three in the 56th minute, but the locals reacted with goals from Viktor Onopko and Iván Ania. That season, Real Madrid won the title and Barça finished fourth. Oviedo was third from last, just a couple of points away from salvation.

Barça suffered several defeats as a visitor against Oviedo in the 90's

This was Oviedo's first relegation since returning to the top tier of Spanish football in the 1988/89 season. During the 90's, Barça visited the Carlos Tartiere on ten occasions, with a balance of 4 wins, 5 losses and only 1 draw.

Before the victory in 2001, the Catalans had fallen heavily in April 2000 (3-0). The 'carbayones' signed a historic rout with goals from Dely Váldes (double) and Roberto Pompei. Louis van Gaal was the 'azulgrana' coach in a season (1999/2000) where Deportivo de La Coruña took the championship.

Oviedo had also surprised Barça in 1998 (2-1) and 1997 (1-0), making it three consecutive victories for the blue and white team in the final stretch of the 20th century. Previously, the 'azulgrana' team had added a couple of triumphs in the 95/96 and 96/97 seasons, 1-2 and 2-4, respectively.

In 94/95 there was the only draw between the two in Oviedo (0-0), while in 1992 and 1994 there were also Catalan victories by 0-2 and 1-3. The 'carbayones', for their part, also added the three points against Barça with victories by 1-0 in 90/91 and 92/93.

Barça registers a negative balance as a visitor at the Carlos Tartiere

Although the record, by League, is clearly favorable to the 'culés' (42-24, with 10 draws), at the Carlos Tartiere Real Oviedo presents a positive record against the 'azulgranas'. In 38 matches, the 'carbayones' have 20 wins, 11 losses and 7 draws, with 72 goals in favor and 52 against.

Clearly, the difference between the two teams grew in the last two decades, with Oviedo even being relegated to the Third Division in 2003. This season, the blue and white team's main priority is to maintain the category, but they have not had a good start to the season.

Of the first 15 points, Veljko Paunovic's team has only rescued 3, the product of one victory and four defeats. Barça, with Hansi Flick on the bench, is undefeated this 2025 in the League away from home. The last 'azulgrana' defeat on the road was against Real Sociedad (1-0), in November 2024. Since then, there have been 13 matches with a balance of 9 wins and 4 draws.
