Both teams had brought forward their matches for the date to early December, due to the dispute of the Spanish Super Cup in Arabia, which the Catalan team finally ended up revalidating
On December 2nd, Barça defeated Atlético (3-1) at home with goals from Raphinha, Dani Olmo, and Ferran Torres. Real Madrid, who had Xabi Alonso as coach until the Super Cup, had thrashed Athletic (0-3) in San Mamés on December 3rd with goals from Kylian Mbappé (brace) and Eduardo Camavinga.
At the end of the first round, Barça remains leader with 49 points and had already secured the honorary winter championship with their win against Villarreal before Christmas (0-2). Barça Significantly Improves on Last Season's First Half
Last season, Barça finished the first half of the season with 38 points, in third place, 6 points behind leaders Atlético (44) and 5 points behind Real Madrid (43). In that regard, Hansi Flick's team notably improved their performance in the first half of 25/26, with 11 more points (49) and only one draw and two losses.
The Catalans have accumulated nine consecutive victories in the tournament, their best streak with the German on the bench, all of them by a minimum margin of 2 goals. The Barcelona team had already achieved 50 points in the second half of the previous season to end up winning the title and is marching firmly towards a repeat championship.
Regarding the rest of matchday 19, which was played concurrently with the Spanish Super Cup final, Villarreal remains firm in the upper part of the standings after defeating Alavés (3-1), while Betis and Espanyol missed the opportunity to get closer to Atlético after drawing with Oviedo and Levante, respectively, with both matches ending 1-1.
