The Spanish Super Cup already has confirmed dates, times and venue for its 42nd edition. FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid and Athletic Club will compete for the first trophy of the season from Wednesday, January 7 to Sunday, January 11, 2026.
Again, for the third time (second consecutive), the King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah will host the tournament which, since 2020, has been played through a final four (semi-finals and final in a single match) in Arabia, with the exception of 2021 (due to the covid-19 pandemic).
Hansi Flick's Barça will defend its crown against Athletic on Wednesday 7th in the first 'semi'. The match will be played from 20:00 (peninsular time) and re-edits the key of the 2025 edition, where the culés won with goals from Gavi and Lamine Yamal (0-2). In the other key, there will be a Madrid derby between Real and Atlético.
This is how the 'semis' of the 2026 Spanish Super Cup will be played
- FC Barcelona (League and Cup champion 24/25) vs Athletic Club (4th classified in LaLiga 24/25). Wednesday, January 7, 2026, 20:00 CEST ('Movistar+').
- Real Madrid (runner-up of League and Cup 24/25) vs Atlético de Madrid (3rd classified in LaLiga 24/25). Thursday, January 8, 2026, 20:00 CEST ('Movistar+').
- Final: Sunday, January 11, 2026 at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah (20:00 CEST, 'Movistar+').
Barça, for the first time since the change of format approved in 2019, arrives as defending champion of all local titles in Spain (League, Cup and Super Cup). The blaugrana team, in addition, is the top winner of the trophy with 15 titles, followed by Real Madrid (13).
The culés kept two of the last three editions (2023, 2025) and are going for their fifth crown in the last decade, as they also obtained the trophy in 2016 and 2018. Before the 2019 edition, the Super Cup was played back and forth between the LaLiga champion and the champion or runner-up of the Copa del Rey.
Since the 2020 edition, in addition to the Cup finalists, the top two classified in the League attend. If the Cup finalists coincide with their position in the League, the third and fourth of the general classification in the Spanish First Division attend, as will happen in the 2026 edition. This is established by the General Regulations of the RFEF:
- If any of the finalists of the Spanish Championship/Copa S.M. el Rey had also qualified in first or second place in the First Division Championship, the two clubs of the Spanish Championship/Copa S.M. el Rey will be maintained and the places corresponding to the First Division will be awarded to the next or following classified clubs.
The 5 finals of the Spanish Super Cup in Arabia
- Real Madrid 1-1 Atlético, in Jeddah on 01/12/2020 (penalties: MAD 4-1 ATM).
- Real Madrid 2-0 Athletic Club, in Riyadh on 01/16/2022.
- FC Barcelona 3-1 Real Madrid, in Riyadh on 01/15/2023.
- Real Madrid 4-1 FC Barcelona, in Riyadh on 01/14/2024.
- FC Barcelona 5-2 Real Madrid, in Jeddah on 01/12/2025.
Of the five finals played in Arabia, the last three were defined with a Clásico. Real Madrid has three titles with the current format, followed by Barça with 2. In 2021, due to the pandemic, the tournament was played in Seville (La Cartuja), with Athletic's victory against the blaugrana team in the final (3-2).
In 2022 there was also a Clásico in the Super Cup in Riyadh, but in 'semis' (Madrid victory by 3-2 in extra time). In the 2020 edition, Barça fell in 'semis' against Atlético by the same score (3-2).
The last final ended with a 'manita' from Flick's Barcelona against Madrid (5-2). The culés crushed the whites with four goals in the first half and, if it wasn't for Szczesny's expulsion in the second half, the thrashing would have been much bigger. Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Alejandro Balde and Raphinha (double) scored the Catalan goals.
