Atlético de Madrid confirmed their bad moment with an early elimination in the Club World Cup. Diego Simeone's team closed the 24/25 season without competing for anything in the last two months of the season and, in the United States, they also failed to reverse their crisis of results.
The tough defeat against PSG (4-0) sealed the 'colchonera' fate in the World Cup, making the victories against Seattle Sounders (1-3) and Botafogo (1-0) insufficient. After the World Cup fiasco, the 'rojiblanca' squad has gone on vacation, with many doubts regarding the planning for the 25/26 season.
One of the most affected players after the elimination was Julián Álvarez. The Argentine arrived last summer as the star reinforcement of a team that aspired, at least, to fight for LaLiga and finally was left empty-handed. Against Botafogo, he provided the assist for the only goal of 'Aleti'.
Now, the 25-year-old striker is beginning to seriously question his continuity in the 'rojiblanco' team. Although he still has five more years of contract, if Simeone does not guarantee him a winning project, he could force his early departure, with FC Barcelona being one of the most feasible destinations for his future.
Julián Álvarez's winning streak breaks 'thanks' to Atlético
Since his debut with the first team of River Plate in 2018, the Argentine striker boasts an enviable record, winning practically everything at club level and making a full international with his national team between 2021 and 2024.
The 'Spider' has already won two Copa Américas, a Finalissima and a World Cup with the Albiceleste. In addition, with River and Manchester City, he only failed to lift at least one official trophy in 2020, a year marked by the covid-19 pandemic.
Julián's streak (he won a dozen trophies between 2018 and 2024), however, has come to an end with Atlético de Madrid, after saying goodbye to the four titles (Liga, Copa, Supercopa and Champions) in play in March and, in addition, consummating the 'colchonero' failure in the Club World Cup.
For the 25/26 season, the outlook does not look too favorable in the 'rojiblanco' team, understanding that Barça and Real Madrid will reinforce their squads to regain all the domestic titles in the course that begins next August.
Julian Álvarez is clear: he must leave Atlético as soon as possible
Hence, Julián and his environment contemplate an early departure from Atlético, with whom he signed until 2030. The one from Calchín is a born winner and will not resist another year without titles in Madrid, especially when it comes to a key season, prior to a new World Cup.
Álvarez, yes, will hardly leave 'Aleti' for less than 100 million euros, since his clause is 500 'kilos' and his current value already reaches 100 M€. Will Barça be able to amortize his signing in the summer of 2026?
The signing of another '9' will be an absolute priority for the azulgrana team once the departure of Robert Lewandowski is finalized. The Pole, yes, will continue to be a starter at the beginning of the 25/26 season, with Ferran Torres waiting for his opportunity on the bench.
This year, however, the club does not plan to amortize a signing of that magnitude. After signing Nico Williams, the board only contemplates a couple more incorporations, probably to reinforce the defense.
