The FC Barcelona board is not considering new reinforcements for the midfield in the upcoming summer market. Although there are very interesting options that could arrive on a free transfer (like Thomas Partey), Hansi Flick is very happy with the resources available in the midfield.
The presence of Pedri González alongside Frenkie de Jong gave solidity and freshness to the team this 2025, while Marc Casadó did a great job during the Dutchman's absence due to injury. Despite Marc Bernal's absence throughout the season, the team did a great job in midfield, led by a tremendous Pedri.
The Canary Islander played practically everything, showing a brutal physical and technical display that places him as a candidate for the next Ballon d'Or. In addition, the return of Gavi, along with the good work of Dani Olmo and Fermín López as attacking midfielders/wingers gave Flick's scheme the necessary balance to sustain the high pressure in each game.
De Jong's renewal closes the debate on reinforcements for the midfield
A year ago, Barça seemed determined to incorporate another defensive pivot. Xavi Hernández insisted on bringing in Martín Zubimendi or Joshua Kimmich, but Flick's arrival cooled negotiations for the Basque and the German. Finally, 'Zubi' agreed to his transfer to Arsenal, while the Rotweill player preferred to renew with Bayern Munich.
At the end of 24/25, the situation is much calmer in Can Barça regarding the need to reinforce. The coaching staff brought out the best version of almost all the players and, in the case of the midfielders, only an eventual departure of De Jong would open the door to the signing of another footballer with similar characteristics.
However, Joan Laporta himself recently admitted the club's confidence in Frenkie's renewal, an operation that must be resolved in the coming weeks, preferably before June 30.
The return of Marc Bernal, another reason to avoid bringing in another midfielder
In turn, the return of Marc Bernal this summer, once he has fully recovered from the serious knee injury suffered last August, is a luxury reinforcement for the culé midfield.
As for pivots, Barça will have De Jong, Casadó and Bernal, although Gavi, Eric García and even Andreas Christensen can also occupy this position in case of emergency. The one who still does not have a natural replacement is Pedri, although Frenkie, Gavi and Dani Olmo himself would be reliable alternatives if the Tenerife player is not at one hundred percent.
As things stand, Barça has a clear roadmap for the next summer market. The idea is to incorporate another left winger (Luis Díaz and Marcus Rashford, the names that sound the strongest) and, perhaps, another right back.
In any case, the club will wait until July-August to focus on incorporations, as the priority is to sign the pending renewals as soon as possible, along with the departure of the players on loan who must return in July (Clément Lenglet, Oriol Romeu and Álex Valle).
