Alexander Isak is now a new Liverpool player. The 25-year-old Swedish striker leaves Newcastle in one of the most impactful operations of the summer: a transfer valued at 150 million euros, which places him as the most expensive signing in English football and third in football history, only behind Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.
With this addition, the 'red' team signs the most expensive move in the history of the Premier League, breaking its own record of summer spending. The agreement includes 125 million pounds direct, plus variables and the so-called "solidarity payment", which raises the total figure to 150 million euros.
A turbulent summer in Newcastle
The transfer puts an end to a soap opera that lasted throughout the market. Isak, author of 27 goals and six assists in 42 games last season, had expressed his desire to leave St. James' Park after considering certain contractual promises unfulfilled. During the preseason, he trained alone, did not participate in the Asian tour and ended up separated from the group by Eddie Howe.
Real Sociedad, his former club, also benefits from the operation with 10% of the capital gain, which will bring him around 15 million euros. Meanwhile, Newcastle had already invested 80 million in Nick Woltemade as a replacement.
Alexander Isak: record contract until 2031
Isak signs with Liverpool until June 2031, a long-term link that reflects the club's commitment to its new offensive reference. Although Newcastle had valued the striker at 180 million last winter, the final agreement was closed at a figure only slightly lower.
"Alexander Isak has become the third most expensive player in football history and the first in the Premier League"
Before his departure, the Swedish international received around 140,000 pounds a week, the fourth highest salary in the squad. However, the lack of a renewal promised by the former co-owner Amanda Staveley and the refusal of sporting director Paul Mitchell to improve his conditions ended up precipitating his departure.
A hero in Newcastle who says goodbye through the back door
Isak's history in Newcastle will be marked by his decisive participation in the Carabao Cup 2024/25, where he scored the winning goal against Liverpool themselves at Wembley, achieving the club's first domestic title in 70 years. Even so, the Swede leaves the club in a climate of tension, after declaring a strike and issuing a public statement expressing his desire to leave.
Impact on European football
With this signing, Liverpool strongly reinforces its attack and sends a clear message to the rest of Europe. The disbursement places Alexander Isak on the historical podium of the most expensive signings, along with Neymar (222M to PSG) and Mbappé (180M to PSG). The challenge now is to respond on the field and justify such an investment.
The movement also reconfigures the transfer market in England, consolidating the Premier as the league with the greatest financial muscle and prominence in major international operations.
