FC Barcelona knows that Frenkie de Jong's renewal is one of the priority issues to resolve within the Azulgrana sports management. At this point, the predisposition between both parties seems to be the best to extend the link, however, there is still a bureaucratic issue to be resolved by the Dutchman.

Specifically, what gives the sensation of blocking the negotiation of the agreement is the fact that De Jong is currently in the process of separating from his lifelong agent, Ali Dursun. While this agreement is not completely dissolved, Barcelona does not have a legal interlocutor —that is, an agent or lawyer— with whom to negotiate the terms of the former Ajax player's renewal.

Barcelona would already have defined the terms of De Jong's new contract

Now, despite the negotiation giving the impression of being temporarily on standby, the Catalan team would not be standing idly by with regard to the preparation of the terms to tie Frenkie de Jong down for a few more years. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Culé team plans to extend his contract under the following parameters:

  1. Two more years of contract (until 2028)
  2. One more optional year, conditioned to his sporting performance (until 2029)

The team from the Ciudad Condal would bet on having Frenkie de Jong, who currently has a contract until June 30, 2026, until he is 31 or 32 years old, depending on whether his performance justifies activating that additional year. If this apparent agreement is fulfilled, the Arkel native could complete a decade as a player for the Blaugrana club, an institution that made his incorporation official on January 23, 2019.

The Dutchman and a well-deserved renewal after a season of vindication

It remains to be seen when the issue of Frenkie de Jong's renewal with FC Barcelona will be resolved. A contractual extension that the '21' has earned after a vindictive 2024/25 season, where, despite starting in a turbulent manner —injured with a sprain in his right ankle, at odds with part of the Azulgrana fans and singled out as a possible sale—, he finished the season as one of the key names in Hansi Flick's scheme.

The midfielder formed a stellar double pivot alongside Pedri González, accumulating 46 matches played and 2,488 minutes in total (two goals and two assists). The former Willem II player established himself as one of the captains of the squad and consolidated himself as a solution to give more balance to the midfield.

De Jong became a key player in Flick's Barça midfield

De Jong positioned himself as a pivot with the ability to build play, generate connections through his good ball handling and, in addition, considerably improved his defensive performance, his main Achilles heel. That is still an area to be polished, but which, at full physical condition, can turn the Dutchman into one of the best players in the world in his demarcation.
