FC Barcelona has postponed the renewal of FC Barcelona more than expected. The 35-year-old goalkeeper signed a one-season contract in October that ended on June 30. Although everything seems agreed between the parties to extend his stay in Catalonia for one more season, the truth is that the Polish player will be a free agent from Tuesday.
In principle, it was expected that 'Tek' would sign his renewal in June, before going on vacation, since his contract does not represent an obstacle to the club's finances. The '25' signed for 1.5 million euros net and should maintain these emoluments with his new contract.
The board offers him a fixed season and another optional one, understanding that the Polish player will be a substitute for the newly signed Joan García in 25/26. However, doubts regarding the future of Marc-André ter Stegen seem to have delayed the renewal of the former Juventus goalkeeper.
Barça maintains its commitment to the goal: Szczesny will be Joan García's substitute
And, with García and Szczesny as the first and second option for the goal, both the German and Iñaki Peña are left without a place in the squad. With the Alicante native there are no doubts regarding his departure, which is expected to close for an amount close to 10 'kilos'.
Ter Stegen, on the other hand, does not want to leave Barça and is very upset with the position of the board and the coaching staff. Clubs such as Galatasaray have tried, without success so far, to convince him to step aside in the azulgrana team, where he has been undisputed in the last eight seasons.
However, the commitment to Joan García makes clear the club's position regarding rejuvenating the squad, although 'Tek', at 35 years old, will be the oldest if he finally renews. Marc-André missed almost all of 24/25 due to an injury to his right knee and, in 23/24, he was also out for several months due to physical problems.
When will Wojciech Szczesny's renewal be announced?
Regardless of when and by which route (transfer, loan, termination of contract) Ter Stegen's departure is resolved, as far as Wojciech Szczesny is concerned, the club should announce his renewal in the first two weeks of July.
The squad will return to work on Sunday, July 13, and by then, ideally, the Polish player will have already signed his new contract. For now, the goalkeeper is enjoying his vacation with his family and the azulgrana board is focused on resolving the signing of Nico Williams first.
The operation for the 'crack' of Athletic has become more complicated than expected due to some contractual demands, but Barça maintains its commitment to the Basque player as a priority to reinforce its attack. The 'plan B', if the negotiation with the player from Pamplona finally collapses, will be Luis Díaz (Liverpool).
