The FC Barcelona could soon repeat the path with which they managed to get rid of Clément Lenglet this summer with Oriol Romeu. The player from Ulldecona must return to the club in July after a season on loan at Girona and, given the few offers that may arrive at the 'culés' offices for a possible transfer, the most likely thing is that the player will terminate his contract.
Romeu signed for Barça in 2023 in exchange for 3.4 million euros, signing for three seasons, until June 2026, with a gross salary of 3.5 'kilos' per year. In his first year, he failed to earn a place in Xavi Hernández's team, although he played 37 games (17 as a starter) in which he provided one assist.
After the arrival of Hansi Flick, Oriol resolved his return to Girona, where he was also unable to recover the remarkable physical condition he showed in his return to Spain during the 22/23 season. The midfielder closed the season with 31 appearances (20 as a starter), but his performance was diminished by problems in his right knee.
Girona wants to get Oriol Romeu back, without paying anything to Barça
However, Míchel's team is betting on his return to Montilivi this summer, as long as he does so with a letter of freedom. Girona does not plan to negotiate a transfer with Barça for the 33-year-old player, as the board has other areas of the field to reinforce to try to return to the top of the LaLiga standings in 25/26.
In a season in which the Catalans debuted in the Champions League, the team came close to relegation (finishing 16th) and the top priority, without a doubt, will be to maintain the category without difficulties. For the moment, beyond some rumors, there are no negotiations underway for any player and there are several players marked to leave the 'rojiblanca' squad.
Barcelona needs to resolve Oriol Romeu's departure
For Barça, as it is a minor signing, the option of offering compensation to the midfielder to terminate his contract is not ideal, but it does not generate opposition in the board either. Firstly, because the player's salary (1.75 million net) is not high and, secondly, because his market options are really scarce.
Oriol will turn 34 in September and the problems in his right knee considerably diminished his performance in 24/25. Even so, Míchel still considers him as a valuable piece in his team, with which he will be able to continue playing in LaLiga for at least one more year.
