Girona confirmed the departure of Bryan Gil, Arnaut Danjuma, Arthur Melo and Oriol Romeu, their four loan signings for the 24/25 season. In the case of the Catalan midfielder, his return to FC Barcelona is confirmed, with whom he has a contract until June 2026 and a termination clause of 400 million euros.

The player from Ulldecona played a total of 35 matches (1,805 minutes) with Míchel's team this season, being a substitute in 9 of his appearances in his return to the 'albirrojo' team. Oriol, however, was far from the level he showed in 22/23, where he was indisputable in a total of 36 matches (3,207 minutes), adding a couple of assists.

His excellent level that year led him to Barça, but in his only season with Xavi Hernández's team he only had prominence in the first three months of competition. In total, Oriol accumulated 1,435 minutes of action spread over 37 matches (17 as a starter) in which he gave one assist. After the arrival of Hansi Flick, the club confirmed his return to Montilivi.

Oriol Romeu has no place in Flick's Barça

A year later, Romeu is in a similar situation again. The 33-year-old midfielder has no place in the plans of the Azulgrana coaching staff, as the pivot position is well covered with the presence of Marc Casadó and Marc Bernal, in addition to the help that Eric García and Gavi himself can give in emergency cases.

To them is added, of course, Frenkie de Jong, whose continuity in the club must be defined in the coming days. The Dutchman regained his starting position in the second half of 24/25 and everything points to him renewing with Barça until 2029.

As things stand, Oriol Romeu will be in Can Barça for a short time, while he resolves his departure to another club. The latest information points to the player's interest in continuing at Girona, but the 'albirrojos' must offer financial compensation to the 'culés' to ensure his definitive transfer.

Barça signed the player from Ulldecona for 3.4 million euros and it is likely that they will rule out a new loan to avoid his departure at 'zero cost' in 2026. For the moment, there are no rumors about other clubs interested in incorporating the 33-year-old player, who spent most of his career with English side Southampton.
