FC Barcelona is already working on resolving Frenkie de Jong's future. The 27-year-old player is one of those whose contract ends in 2026, and the club does not want to wait until June to resolve his contractual situation. Although the player from Arkel has had more minutes in recent matches, Hansi Flick still considers him a substitute, a key point for the Dutch international's decision, who so far continues to give no hints about his future.
"My contract renewal is a topic for the newspapers here, but for me, it is not. I want to play football and then I will see what the club wants to do with me... Then I will decide what I want to do, along with my agent and my family," said the midfielder a few weeks ago when referring to his contractual situation. Since then, everything remains the same with the '21'. Conversations with the management are completely stalled, but the club has already made its position clear.
Barça does not intend to close the 2024-25 season with pending renewals
For Joan Laporta, starting the preseason with players facing their last year of contract is not feasible for the upcoming summer. The club has already resolved the first hot potato with Ronald Araujo's renewal and, in the coming days, hopes to finalize new contracts for Pedri González and Pablo Gavi, who also have contracts ending in 2026.
The same applies to Iñigo Martínez and Robert Lewandowski, who, based on their performance in the 24-25 season, already have another year secured at the club. Both the Polish and the Basque must play at least 55% and 60% of the official matches this season, respectively, to secure their continuity, something that both have practically guaranteed at this point in the calendar. In both cases, the management believes it is appropriate to extend their contracts, at least until 2027, as a reward for their exemplary work.
With Frenkie, however, the situation is more complex. The renewal offer that Barça presented to him in 2023 expired without any response from the player and, resigning himself to a secondary role for the rest of the 24-25 season, it is likely that the player will decide to leave this year. Between 2022 and 2023, the club had several very interesting offers on the table, but the midfielder chose not to negotiate. For now, the '21' maintains the second highest salary in the squad (€19M gross).
