FC Barcelona faces Borussia Dortmund in the Champions quarter-finals: a historic clash!
FC Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund will meet again in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. The Blaugrana team already defeated the reigning runner-up of the tournament in the group stage (2-3 in Germany), in a thrilling match that ended the first half in a goalless draw. In the second half, goals from Raphinha and Ferran Torres (double) secured victory for Hansi Flick's side, while Guinea's Serhou Guirassy scored twice for the hosts.
Interestingly, the culés and 'black and yellows' have never faced each other in a knockout stage match in the Champions League. Barça advanced to the quarter-finals after overcoming Benfica (4-1 on aggregate), while Dortmund did the same in a closely contested tie against Lille (3-2 on aggregate). Looking ahead to the next phase, the Catalans arrive as clear favorites, both in terms of current form and history, although Borussia is also a 'heavyweight' in the top club competition in Europe.
Barça's favorable history against Dortmund in the Champions League
Barcelona enters the quarter-finals with a streak of 9 unbeaten matches with 8 victories and only 1 draw. The only defeat for the Blaugrana was in matchday 1 of the group stage, against Monaco (2-1), while the Germans had to play the playoff against Sporting CP (3-0 on aggregate) to reach the round of 16. In the group stage, the 'black and yellows' also lost, besides Barça, to Real Madrid (5-2) and Bologna (2-1), still with Nuri Sahin on the bench, who was replaced in January by Niko Kovac.
Before their encounter on December 11, Barça and Dortmund had only faced each other in the group stage of the 2019/20 season. In matchday 1, both teams drew goalless in Germany (0-0). Later, in matchday 5, the Blaugrana won 3-1 at Camp Nou thanks to goals from Luis Suárez, Leo Messi, and Antoine Griezmann. Jadon Sancho scored for the visitors. In the end, Barça topped the group with 14 points, four more than Borussia (10). Ernesto Valverde's side would fall in the quarter-finals to Bayern Munich, while PSG eliminated 'BVB' in the round of 16.

The other encounter in Europe between culés and 'black and yellows' took place in the UEFA Super Cup of 1997. Dortmund had just won the Champions League in Munich against Juventus (3-1), while Barça arrived as the champion of the now-defunct UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, a tournament in which Bobby Robson's team defeated PSG (1-0) in the final in Rotterdam. That was the last European Super Cup played over two legs.
In the first leg at Camp Nou, the Blaugrana secured victory 2-0, thanks to goals from Luis Enrique and Rivaldo. In the second leg, the result was 1-1, with goals from Giovanni (Barcelona) and Heinrich (Borussia). The Catalans claimed the title with an aggregate score of 3-1, thus lifting their second Super Cup.
