The Premier League will make history in the 2025/26 Champions League with a total of 6 representatives. Why does UEFA grant so many spots to the English?

The Premier League will be the first European league with six clubs in the same edition of the UEFA Champions League. Thanks to its coefficient (the best in UEFA), the English, like LaLiga, had secured an extra spot for next season in the Champions League in April.

Normally, the big five leagues have four spots each, which in some cases become five if one of their representatives wins the Europa League.

Following the format change this season, with the implementation of the 36-team league phase, the number of available spots is expanded for the two leagues with the best coefficient, in this case the Premier League and LaLiga.

The Europa League will give England an extra spot in the next Champions League

However, the qualification of Manchester United and Tottenham to the Europa League final ensured that the Premier League would make history as the first league with six representatives in a Champions League edition.

'Red devils' and 'spurs' have completed a lamentable season in their league (they are in 15th and 16th place, respectively), but they will be able to save the year if they win the trophy in San Mamés on May 21.

Manchester left Athletic Club in the way by a global of 7-1, after a tie conditioned by the arbitration controversies. Tottenham, on the other hand, surpassed the great surprise of the tournament, the Norwegian Bodo/Glimt (5-1 on aggregate).

The last time United advanced to the UEL final, they fell on penalties to Villarreal in 2021. The 'spurs', on the other hand, had not reached the decisive stage since 1984.

The six English clubs that aspire to play in the next Champions League

For the moment, only Liverpool, as Premier League champion, has secured its spot in the next Champions League. Arsenal, semi-finalist of the current edition, has 67 points and, as escort of the 'reds', are very close to sealing their classification.

Further back appears Manchester City, third with 64 points, followed by Newcastle and Chelsea, both with 63. Nottingham Forest is sixth with 61 points, one more than Aston Villa (7th). Both still have serious options to get into the next Champions League, with three Premier League games to play.

Chelsea must also play the Conference League final against Betis, but this only secures their spot in the next edition of the Europa League. The 'verdiblancos' are also in the fight for fifth place in LaLiga, one point behind Villarreal.
