UEFA confirms Montjuïc as the stadium for Barcelona-PSG

The FC Barcelona vs Paris Saint-Germain match of matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 will finally be played in Montjuïc. UEFA recently confirmed the change of venue on the official competition website, ruling out the Spotify Camp Nou as the venue for the first home match of the Blaugrana team in the tournament.

Barça requested UEFA to play the first matchday of the league phase as a visitor and, in addition, a special permit to use two stadiums, if necessary, during the 36-team league stage. The entity agreed to both requests, so the culé temple is not yet 100% ruled out for the initial phase of the competition.

However, the match against PSG, scheduled for October 1, will not be able to be played at Camp Nou. First, because the club has not yet managed to resolve the acquisition of the first occupancy license in its phase 1A. Without this document, it is impossible for the Ajuntament to authorize the reopening of the Estadi.

In addition, UEFA does not consider it feasible for Barça to play the league phase matches with only two partially enabled stands. Although the initial capacity would be 27,000 spectators (Montilivi received 14,000 fans in the 24/25 edition), exclusively having the Tribuna and Gold Sud available does not allow segregation of the rival fans.

That is, Barça would have to wait for the conclusion of phase 1B, with the side enabled, to be able to play Champions League at the Spotify Camp Nou. This phase increases the capacity to 45,000 spectators, in addition to guaranteeing independent access and an exclusive area for local fans.

The Spotify Camp Nou moves away from the Champions League, but not from LaLiga

Therefore, the Blaugrana team will continue playing in Montjuïc the league phase, at least, until November. In fact, the pace in the evolution of the works and the processing of permits suggests that, for the remainder of 2025, it will be very difficult to see Champions League matches in the culé temple.

For LaLiga, on the other hand, there would be no inconvenience in returning home once the Ajuntament grants the pending licenses. The idea is to have everything ready in the Estadi for Sunday 27 (against Real Sociedad) or, failing that, for mid-October, after the break.

LaLiga authorized the team to play matchday 5 (against Getafe) at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, a venue that, despite its limited capacity (6,000 spectators) meets all the security and operational requirements for matches of the Spanish First Division.
