The Copa del Rey final between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is up in the air. The 'Casa Blanca' has canceled its entire previous schedule and threatens not to play the final due to its arbitration complaints

Real Madrid has starred this Friday in a new regrettable episode related to its persecution against Spanish arbitration. The club canceled all official events scheduled by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) prior to the Copa del Rey final against FC Barcelona, and does not rule out withdrawing from the match to be played on Saturday, April 26 from 10:00 p.m. at La Cartuja.

Madrid's decision lies in the claims made by Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea and Pablo González Fuertes, principal and VAR designated by the RFEF for the final, against the constant arbitration reports issued by the official Madrid channel, 'RMTV'.

Both referees complained about the harassment by the 'Casa Blanca' and the club made an official complaint to the RFEF asking to change the Clásico referees, as they consider these claims inadmissible just before the match. Now, Madrid's lawyers will issue the club's official report in this regard.

Real Madrid's statement on the controversy with the final referees

This is the statement published on Real Madrid's official website:

"Real Madrid C.F. considers the public statements made today by the referees designated for the Copa del Rey Final, to be held tomorrow, April 26, 2025, unacceptable.

These statements, which have surprisingly focused attention on videos from a media outlet protected by freedom of expression, such as Real Madrid TV, deliberately made 24 hours before against one of the final's participants, demonstrate, once again, a clear and manifest animosity and hostility on the part of these referees toward Real Madrid.

Even more surprising statements, under a threatening tone, alluding to the unity of the referees, to announce alleged measures or actions that are far from the principles of fairness, objectivity, and impartiality that should prevail just hours before a football event that is attracting the attention of hundreds of spectators. of millions of people around the world.

Given the seriousness of what happened, Real Madrid hopes that those responsible for the RFEF and the refereeing establishment will act accordingly, adopting the necessary measures to defend the prestige of the institutions they represent."

Madrid, outraged by the RFEF's "no" to changing the referees of the final

According to the official report of the 'Casa Blanca' channel, 'RMTV', "the seriousness of the events that occurred in the press conference of the referee team, prior to the Cup final, has caused the club not to attend any of the official acts of the Federation".

This Friday, Carlo Ancelotti and Luka Modric were due to attend the press conference prior to the final at 7:15 p.m. Afterwards, at 8:00 p.m., the captains of Barça and Madrid, Ter Stegen and Modric, were scheduled to pose with Ancelotti and Hansi Flick in the official photos of the match presentation.

A dinner between directives was also scheduled, to which, previously, Florentino Pérez had confirmed his absence. Finally, the entire agenda was canceled by Madrid on Friday afternoon, just after the statements of the referees designated for the Cup final.

For the moment, the uncertainty in Seville is total. Around 30,000 'merengues' fans have arrived in the city to accompany the team in La Cartuja and, with everything sold and ready for the final, the logical thing is that Real Madrid will appear this Saturday for the match scheduled at 10:00 p.m.

However, the tension between the RFEF and Florentino Pérez is tremendous and, less than 24 hours before the start of the match against Barcelona, everything is still up in the 'air'. In fact, 'RMTV' has continued this Friday its agenda against the referees of the final, with another report where they question De Burgos Bengoetxea and his null participation in Champions League matches or FIFA tournaments.

Will Real Madrid continue the historic embarrassment of not appearing in the Copa del Rey final? In that case, Barça would have to play the final on a new date against Real Sociedad, as stipulated in Article 80 of the RFEF's Disciplinary Code.

The sanctions that Madrid would suffer for not showing up for the Copa del Rey final

According to the sanctions established in the General Regulations and the Disciplinary Code of the RFEF, Real Madrid would face the following punishments in case of not showing up on Saturday to the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.

🔴Sports sanctions

  • The team that does not show up for a Copa del Rey match automatically loses the match and, being a knockout competition, is eliminated from the tournament.
  • If the withdrawal occurs in the final match, it will be played between the other finalist (Barça) and the team eliminated by the offending player (Real Sociedad). In any case, the player who failed to appear or withdrew will not be able to participate in the next edition of the tournament.

  • In addition, the regulations establish that the offending team will not be able to participate in the next edition of the Copa del Rey

🔴Economic sanctions

  • An economic fine is imposed on the offending club. The general scale ranges between 3,006 and 12,021 euros, depending on the category and circumstances of the club.
  • For teams in the First or Second Division, the economic sanction is usually between 6,001 and 9,000 euros; for teams in the Second B, between 3,001 and 6,000 euros.
  • If the absent team is a visitor, it also has the obligation to compensate the local team for the damages caused.

These sanctions are applied unless there are duly justified and accepted force majeure causes by the disciplinary bodies. In the case of the final in La Cartuja, Madrid lacks legal arguments that ratify its abandonment.
