From bad bonus to top contract: this is how the agreement with Nike was negotiated, which doubled Barça's income
The mystery and speculation surrounding the amounts of the new sponsorship agreement between Nike and FC Barcelona have come to an end. It had to be an authorized spokesperson of the club, such as Enric Masip, advisor to president Joan Laporta, who publicly 'got wet' and revealed the details of the millionaire agreement between both parties.
The new contract with Nike and the 1:1 rule
Masip, in the program 'La Posesión de SPORT', explained that one of the keys to the agreement was to allow Barça to operate again under the 1:1 rule, something fundamental for its economic room for maneuver. "They told us that if we signed with Nike, they would give us 1:1. Barça went from a contract that Bartomeu had previously signed, of 40 million, with a bad bonus that made it drop to 33, to a new one of 66 million. If you signed that contract, Barça would enter the 1:1 rule," explained the former handball player.

Now, despite the fact that the initial proposal already represented an improvement, Laporta was not satisfied. Masip said that the Catalan president decided to wait and not sign immediately, seeking a much more substantial improvement:
"The president said no because he wanted Barça's shirt to be the best paid shirt in the world. He knew that Real Madrid is earning 90-95 million euros"
Darren Dein, the key figure who unlocked everything
In turn, according to Laporta's advisor, it was thanks to the intervention of Darren Dein, who acted as an intermediary between Nike and FC Barcelona, that the agreement took a radical turn. "That contract that they offered us of 66 million went, after that intermediation, to 122 per season, counting here the 58 million that were advanced at the time of signing. Now it is the best paid," he pointed out.

Finally, Masip also explicitly defended Dein's role in the operation, stressing that his commission was more than justified by the impact it had. "When someone comes and says: 'hey, I'm bringing you this, but I'll charge this', well, if he gets you that amount, his commission is well paid. Thanks to him you have doubled your income. Nike has been with you since 1996 and they didn't want to go beyond 66 million with a bad bonus. The president didn't want that contract. The one who unlocked the situation was Darren Dein, because Spotify is on Nike's board. You went from 66 million to 122. Therefore, this gentleman's intermediation is good," he concluded.
