Why is May 6 key for Barça in the Champions League? In 2009 and 2015 they experienced epic nights. Now, against Inter, they want to relive history
May 6 could become another historic day for FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League. If the 'culé' team manages to beat Inter Milan at the Giuseppe Meazza, in the return leg of the 'semis', they will secure their place in the grand final of the continental tournament. In turn, this victory would further bring the option of conquering a coveted treble that excites all the 'Azulgrana' fans.
But, why is it said that May 6 is a special date for Barça in the Champions League? The answer lies in two specific years: 2009 and 2015, campaigns in which the Catalan team experienced memorable nights... and ended up lifting the treble.
May 6, 2009: The mythical 'Iniestazo' at Stamford Bridge
May 6, 2009 is one of the most iconic dates in the history of FC Barcelona in the Champions League. On that occasion, the Barcelona team visited Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, in the return leg of the semi-finals. The London team took the lead with an early goal from Michael Essien in the 9th minute, and maintained the lead for almost the entire match.
However, when everything seemed lost, Andrés Iniesta scored a legendary goal in the 90+3 minute, after a pass from Lionel Andrés Messi. The 'strike' from the 'Manchego', from the edge of the area, was unstoppable for Petr Čech and unleashed one of the most euphoric celebrations of Barcelona fans.
That goal meant the final 1-1, which gave Barça the pass to the final for the double value of the away goal. Subsequently, Pep Guardiola's team beat Manchester United 2-0 with goals from Samuel Eto'o and Messi, conquering the third Champions League in their history... and the first treble.
May 6, 2015: Exhibition against Bayern and path to the second treble
Six years later, on May 6, FC Barcelona smiled again. On that date, the 'culés' received Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou, again in the semi-finals of the Champions League. In a brilliant match, the team from the 'Ciudad Condal' won 3-0 with a stellar performance from Lionel Messi, author of two goals (77' and 80'), including his iconic waist break to Jérôme Boateng and subsequent definition with a very elegant chip, and another goal from Neymar Jr. in the 90+4'.
The return leg, played on May 12 at the Allianz Arena, ended 3-2 in favor of Bayern Munich, but with a double from Neymar that sealed the tie. In the final, FC Barcelona beat Juventus 1-3 with goals from Ivan Rakitić, Luis Suárez and 'Ney' himself, thus achieving their fifth and, so far, last Champions League... and their second treble.
Another omen to dream big?
The coincidence of dates and circumstances invites 'culé' optimism. In 2009 and 2015, FC Barcelona won the Champions League and completed the treble, starting their decisive path with victories on May 6. Now, in 2025, destiny offers another opportunity.
The next challenge will be a demanding duel against a tough Inter Milan, who already demonstrated their ability in the 3-3 draw in the first leg. History is written, but the present can still offer another golden page.
