FC BARCELONA
Christensen could become a key piece for Barça, discover why!
The return of Andreas Christensen: an opportunity for Barça.
The defender Andreas Christensen in the 2023-24 season managed to play 42 matches, which translates to 2,788 minutes on the pitch. However, in the current season, the ordeal he suffers from injuries has only allowed him to participate in the first match of LaLiga with FC Barcelona under Hansi Flick, where they faced Valencia CF (1-2) at Mestalla.
The Danish player, during the visit to the 'ches', saw only 26 minutes as a substitute for Pau Cubarsí. Since then, he has not worn the jersey to defend the blue and claret colors again, due to having to stop for a tendinopathy in his left Achilles tendon that he had been dragging since last season. A physical setback that required him to undergo minor surgery in November, which he himself considered a "cleaning".
After going under the knife, Christensen was sidelined until January 18, managing to be included in the squads against Getafe CF (1-1), SL Benfica (4-5) and Valencia CF (7-1), but he always remained on the bench. When it seemed he was ready to return, the defender suffered a calf injury in his right leg.
Then, Andreas made efforts to try to resolve the situation that has kept him sidelined and received medical clearance. However, just before the return match for LaLiga EA Sports against Real Sociedad (4-0), played on March 2, he relapsed and the club announced he would be out for three to four weeks.
Andreas Christensen, a defensive solution to consider for Barcelona
With just a few days left until Andreas Christensen likely receives medical clearance and can integrate under the orders of Hansi Flick, the Danish player could have serious chances of seeing minutes with the blue and claret team. It should not be overlooked that the German coach will need to make rotations to give rest to the starters so they can arrive as fresh as possible for the decisive stretch of the season.
Although Barcelona has several defenders like Pau Cubarsí, Iñigo Martínez, injured due to internal meniscus tear in his right knee (with an estimated recovery time of two to three weeks), Ronald Araujo and Eric García, all will need rest in the most important chapter of the campaign. Additionally, considering the international break, if the estimated timelines are met, Christensen could be back for the match against Girona on March 30. However, it is more likely that he will return for the match against Real Betis on April 5.
The Danish player can also be an additional option for the midfield
After the injuries of Marc Bernal (anterior cruciate ligament tear in his left knee and an external meniscus injury) against Rayo Vallecano in the third round of the domestic competition, and now Marc Casadó's injury (partial tear of the lateral collateral ligament in the right knee), who will be out for at least two months, presents another opportunity for Andreas Christensen. It is worth remembering that during the last season he performed in several matches in that defensive pivot position.
Although if he is considered for this position, he would have to fight for the spot against Frenkie de Jong (starter) and Eric García, who Hansi Flick has also turned into a key player in the midfield.
