The Barça board hopes to close Eric García's renewal soon. Against all odds, Andreas Christensen will also stay. Why?
While waiting to resolve the pending renewals, the board of FC Barcelona has under control the future of most of its players for the next season. Of the players who end their contract in 2026, only two have their continuity assured, while the rest must resolve their departure in the final stretch of the summer market.
This is the case of Iñaki Peña and Héctor Fort. Both will be available for the debut in La Liga against Mallorca, but they have run out of place in the squad. The goalkeeper is expected to receive a letter of release to go to another Spanish club, while the full-back should renew and leave on loan. For now, he has several options inside and outside of Spain to continue his career.
Eric García: agreed renewal, but on hold
On the contrary, those who should stay at least one more year in the team are Eric García and Andreas Christensen. The player from Martorell has everything agreed to sign, according to information leaked from inside the club, until 2029 or 2030. The '24' is one of Hansi Flick's trusted men and has earned the position as Jules Koundé's substitute right-back.
In addition, he can play without problems as a central defender in both profiles, as well as a defensive pivot. His versatility and professionalism are highly appreciated by the coaching staff. Not in vain, Flick himself stopped his return to Girona a couple of times in 24/25.
However, the signing of Eric's new contract will have to wait, at least, until September. The board prefers to close all pending folders in the final stretch of the summer market first. Afterwards, there will be time to close everything with his agent.
Christensen must also renew for one more year
Similarly, with Andreas Christensen, the club's idea is to extend his contract until 2027, thus preventing the Dane from being free to negotiate with any team as a free agent from January 1st. The 29-year-old defender was expected to be the discard among the central defenders for the 25/26 season, but finally it was Iñigo Martínez who decided to go to Arabia.
The '15', on the other hand, has always openly expressed his desire to stay, even knowing he is a substitute. The player from Lillerod missed practically the entire previous season due to injury, but showed in the pre-season that he is ready to fight for a place. Flick, in that sense, values his dedication and experience, so he will take him into account whenever Cubarsí and Araujo need a replacement.
As things stand, the Barcelona board is clear about the future of its defenders. Beyond the minimal possibility of going for another central defender in the final stretch of the market, the club is committed to ensuring the continuity of all players with the confidence of the coach.
