Gavi returns from vacation three days early and begins his preparation for a new season, where he hopes to regain his lost prominence
Just three days before the start of the pre-season of FC Barcelona, the players are already starting to put aside their vacations and return to the Ciutat Esportiva to start preparing. The last to join, so far, is Gavi.
In this sense, the midfielder native of Los Palacios will seek to revitalize himself after a 2024/25 season where he could not have the expected minutes because he barely returned in October 2024 after a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the right knee and an associated injury in the lateral meniscus on November 19, 2023 with the Spanish national team.
The '6' in the past year participated in 42 matches (1,688 minutes), unlike the 2022/23 season, in which he saw action during 49 matches (3,527'), most of them as a starter. In 2023/24 he only played in 15 matches before suffering the injury.
Rumors aside: Gavi's future will remain linked to Barça
Gavi is one of the young players with the greatest projection of Barça. The midfielder has attracted the attention of several clubs in the past, but none could change his desire to succeed in Barcelona.
An example of this is Paris Saint-Germain, who, according to rumors, was very interested in acquiring the services of the '6' blaugrana. After this, the player gave some statements where he referred to the subject without hesitation.
"It may be. And I understand people who may come to believe it, but it's not going to happen. I am very calm. My illusion and my mentality is to make my entire career at Barça."
Gavi has a contract with Barcelona until June 2030. The link was extended in January 2025, with a termination clause of 1,000 million euros.
Ter Stegen also returns ahead of schedule: Does he challenge Barcelona?
Another player who decided to shorten his days off is Marc-André ter Stegen. The '1' has already reported to the training center of the azulgrana team, with his future still in the air.
In this context, looking ahead to the next year, if he stays, the German goalkeeper would become the third goalkeeper of the team. It is expected that Joan García will be the first and Wojciech Szczęsny, who has already signed his renewal until 2027.
Thus, 'MATS' would lose the great prominence to which he is accustomed, as Barça's bet in terms of the goal seems to start falling on other figures for the first time in the last 10 years.
The future of the native goalkeeper of Mönchengladbach is not at all clear. However, recent rumors have strongly linked him with Galatasaray and Manchester City.
However, the proposal of the Turkish giant would not end up convincing the German. For its part, the English team could take the '1' out of Camp Barça if Pep Guardiola decides to contact 'MATS', since the performance of Ederson under the 'citizen' goal in the 2024/25 and 2023/24 seasons has been in free fall.
Ter Stegen's idea would be to force his stay at Barça, unless the azulgrana team pays him in full the three years of contract that he has left.
Barcelona, in its search to reduce the wage bill and then be able to operate under the 1/1 rule, must release players who have high salaries in the squad.
From the club's perspective, the most convenient alternative would be to close a transfer close to 10 million euros. If this operation does not materialize, a loan is contemplated in which the receiving team would commit to assume most of the player's salary, estimated at about 14 million euros gross.
As a last resort, the possibility of a contractual termination is evaluated, although this option is presented as the most complex: the German player has a current contract until 2028 and a termination clause set at 500 million euros.
