FC Barcelona confirmed this Monday that Pablo Páez Gavira, Gavi, will finally undergo surgery to relieve his discomfort in his right knee. The club did everything possible to avoid this decision, opting for a conservative treatment that, finally, did not give the expected results. After three weeks on the sidelines, the '6' will be operated on again by doctor Joan Carles Monllau.

This was the same doctor who operated on him after his very serious cruciate ligament injury, with involvement of the external meniscus, in November 2023. Now, the Andalusian player has damage to the internal meniscus, so an arthroscopy will be enough to 'clean' the affected area.

According to the official statement from Barça, the midfielder "underwent intense sports stress tests yesterday after completing conservative treatment for a radial tear of the internal meniscus of the right knee". Once the diagnosis was concluded, an arthroscopic review was recommended, which will require an undefined period of absence.

When will Gavi play again with Barça?

In that sense, the estimated time off for arthroscopies ranges from four to five weeks, so Gavi could receive medical discharge at the end of October. Luckily, at the beginning of next month there is another international break, a factor that reduces the number of official Barça matches that the player from Los Palacios y Villafranca will miss.

Gavi was injured in training on Friday, August 29, two days before the match of matchday 3 of LaLiga against Rayo. Due to his knee problems, he did not travel with Spain for the matches against Bulgaria and Turkey. After the break, he was also unavailable against Valencia, Newcastle and Getafe.

If he had responded positively to the conservative treatment, the midfielder hoped to reappear next Sunday against Real Sociedad or, failing that, on matchday 2 of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain. However, with his surgery confirmed, the '6' is ruled out for the next six or seven matches of the Blaugrana team.

Hopefully, the Andalusian will be medically cleared in time to play the first Clásico of the season, the weekend of October 25 and 26 (date and time to be confirmed) at the Santiago Bernabéu. Last season, the Spanish international also missed the first two months of competition, reappearing in mid-October in a League match against Sevilla (5-1).

The matches that Gavi would miss after undergoing surgery

  1. Real Oviedo vs FC Barcelona: matchday 6 of LaLiga 25/26
  2. FC Barcelona vs Real Sociedad: matchday 7 of LaLiga 25/26
  3. FC Barcelona vs Paris Saint-Germain: matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League 25/26
  4. Sevilla FC vs FC Barcelona: matchday 8 of LaLiga 25/26
  5. FC Barcelona vs Girona: matchday 9 of LaLiga 25/26
  6. FC Barcelona vs Olympiacos: matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League 25/26
  7. Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona: matchday 10 of LaLiga 25/26

This is how the Barcelona infirmary is: 5 players are still on the sidelines due to injury

Before his injury, Gavi played 66 minutes with Barça in the first two matchdays of La Liga. The Andalusian was a substitute against Mallorca (21') and Levante (45'), the latter a match where he played the entire second half. Against the Vermellones he gave an assist in the 0-3 thrashing.

In the pre-season, the midfielder left very good feelings, adding 3 goals and 1 assist in the 4 friendlies played by the club (he was a starter in two opportunities). However, the '6' could be around two months out, again due to problems in the knee that he broke in November 2023.

With his absence, Hansi Flick loses a key player in his rotation plan. Gavi can lend a hand as a defensive pivot and attacking midfielder. In this last demarcation, Barça will also lose Fermín López for the next three weeks, who was injured in the last minute of the match against Getafe.

Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde also remain in the Blaugrana infirmary, with a more encouraging prognosis. Both hope to receive medical discharge this week, with the full-back being the closest to overcoming his injury in the left thigh.

The '10', meanwhile, is working to overcome his discomfort in the pubis and hopes to be available against PSG. The other player who remains on the sidelines is Ter Stegen, out until the end of the year after undergoing back surgery.
