Gerard Martín underwent surgery to treat his injury to his right hand. The left-back will have a recovery of 3 to 4 weeks and will be available for Barça's pre-season.

Calendar of FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona issued the official medical report of Gerard Martín this Tuesday. The Barça full-back suffered an injury to his right hand in Spain's debut in the U-21 Euro against Slovakia (2-3 victory) that left him out of the continental tournament.

In that sense, the Barça medical team confirmed that the 23-year-old defender underwent a surgical intervention, successfully, which involves a recovery period of 3 to 4 weeks.

According to the club, Gerard was operated on for the dislocation of the base of the fifth metacarpal of his right hand by Dr. Xavier Mir, under the supervision of the Barça Medical Services, with which he is expected to be medically discharged in time to join the Barça pre-season from day one.

The squad will return to work on Monday, July 14 at the Ciutat Esportiva and, a couple of weeks later, will travel to Asia to play three matches in Japan (Vissel Kobe) and South Korea (Seoul and Daegu).

Gerard Martín, ready for pre-season and attentive to his future

In this way, Martín will be able to return to training with the rest of the group in mid-July, in principle starting as the second option for the left-back position. Alejandro Balde will once again be the undisputed starter, while the '35', now with a first-team place, hopes to have the same prominence he enjoyed in the final stretch of the 24/25 season.

The youth player closed the year with 42 appearances (20 as a starter) in which he added 1 goal and 6 assists in 1,793 minutes of action. Hansi Flick maintains full confidence in him, but the club does not rule out selling him if a good offer arrives in the coming weeks.

For the moment, Wolverhampton and Bournemouth are the teams that have been mentioned as possible destinations for the Catalan defender. Gerard Martín has a contract until 2028 and his termination clause is 100 million euros. For its part, its market value in Transfermarkt reaches 12 M€.

Grimaldo, Barça's plan B if Gerard Martín leaves

However, Barça could let him go for a figure close to 20 'kilos'. If his sale is completed, the club would have to go to the market to incorporate another left-back. Alejandro Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen), for now, is the option best valued by the board and the coaching staff.

The signing of the Spanish international would not represent a high expense, since his clause is around 15 'kilos'. In that sense, it would be a change of cards: what is entered by Martín will be reinvested in Grimaldo. The Valencia native was already Bundesliga champion in 2024 and could fight hand in hand with Balde for the title.
