Joan García kept a clean sheet in his debut with Barça against Mallorca at Son Moix. So far in the 21st century, only two goalkeepers have debuted without conceding goals as 'culés'
FC Barcelona began the 25/26 season with Joan García as their main goalkeeper, due to the absence of Marc-André ter Stegen due to injury and the non-registration of Wojciech Szczesny. The native of Sallent de Llobregat made a brilliant debut by keeping a clean sheet and set a record that only two goalkeepers have achieved in the 21st century.
García had a very quiet performance in the match, barely receiving a single shot on goal throughout the game, when the Kosovar Vedat Muriqi shot from inside the area after a cross from Mateu Morey in the 21st minute. It was a low shot, controllable for the 'culé' goalkeeper.
In addition, the '13' provoked Muriqi's expulsion in the 39th minute, anticipating the experienced forward by coming out of his area to clear a ball. The goalkeeper ended up with a strong blow to the cheekbone, but was able to play the rest of the match without problems.
Joan García equals Claudio Bravo's record 11 years later
Making your debut with the Barça shirt in goal is not an easy task. Since the beginning of this century, eight goalkeepers have won on their debut (Bonano, Dutruel, Pepe Reina, Rüstü, Claudio Bravo, Ter Stegen, Szczesny and Joan Garcia himself).
Five of them began their 'culé' stage with a draw (Víctor Valdés, Jorquera, Rubén Martínez, Masip and Neto) and another four debuted with a defeat (Pinto, Oier, Cillessen and Iñaki Peña)
Of the aforementioned goalkeepers, apart from García, only Claudio Bravo was able to keep a clean sheet. The Chilean debuted with a 3-0 victory against Elche on August 24, 2014 at the Spotify Camp Nou, the same result in the debut of the Sallent goalkeeper in the Balearic Islands.
Barça had a scare with Joan García before the debut
Can Barça had a small scare before the inaugural match. After the warm-up at Son Moix, Joan García entered the locker room with gestures of pain after suffering a dislocation in the little finger of his left hand; despite the alarm, the goalkeeper was finally able to play minutes thanks to doctor Ricardo Pruna, who was able to put his finger back in place on the field.
Hansi Flick has given García confidence to be a starter since the preseason. It is worth remembering that the native of Sallent de Llobregat arrived from RCD Espanyol this summer. In his debut as a 'blaugrana' he gave the feeling that he will be immovable for the German coach.
