Barça could remove Ter Stegen's captaincy due to the medical report issue. Is the club right with this decision?
The FC Barcelona board is very upset with Marc-André ter Stegen. Beyond the doubts about his role in 2025/26 after the signing of Joan García and the renewal of Wojciech Szczesny, the German's refusal to accept the club's medical report after his surgery has created a big problem for the club, less than a week before the start of LaLiga.
Ter Stegen not only refused to speak with the Barça doctors after undergoing surgery in Bordeaux last week. Now, he has suspended all contacts with the board, refusing to go to the Ciutat Esportiva to define his situation. Therefore, the club believes that the '1' should be removed from the squad and, therefore, lose the captain's armband.
The latest information indicates that, after returning to work this Thursday, Hansi Flick himself will be in charge of communicating the decision to the dressing room. The relationship between the coach and 'Matts' has deteriorated since last April, when the goalkeeper wanted to force his return to the XI in the final stretch of 25/26.
Although Ter Stegen received medical discharge earlier than expected, he was clearly not at his best to regain the starting position and the coaching staff kept Szczesny in goal. The players, meanwhile, remain on the sidelines of the controversy and several of their references, including Raphinha, Ronald Araujo and Gavi, publicly expressed their support for the still Barça captain.
However, the scenario has changed and, with the current tension, thinking that Marc-André can take the microphone next Sunday to give the traditional presentation speech of the 25/26 squad in the Joan Gamper Trophy seems absurd. In any case, both the club and the player defend their interests tooth and nail, each party with strong reasons to set positions.
