Romário surprises: Argentina or Real Madrid?

Romário de Souza Faria, one of the great legends of Fútbol Club Barcelona, has once again made it clear that his heart is still 'azulgrana'. In an interview with a digital media outlet in Brazil, the former striker had to choose between wearing the jersey of the Argentine national team or that of Real Madrid.

The Brazilian, who played a season and a half at Barça, scored more than 50 official goals and won a League and a Super Cup in just 84 matches. Despite his short stay at the Camp Nou, Romário left his mark as one of the most brilliant strikers to have played for the Catalan club.

About to turn 60, Romário has combined his life between football and politics, but has never hidden his sympathy for the 'culé' team. During the interview, when asked if he would prefer to play with Argentina or with Real Madrid, he didn't hesitate for a second:

The answer surprised the interviewers due to the historical background of the Brazil–Argentina rivalry. However, the former player prioritized his feeling towards Barcelona over any national issue.

Romário arrived at Barça in the summer of 1993 from PSV Eindhoven. In his first season, he scored 30 goals in LaLiga, being key in winning the title. His finishing ability, his electric style and his skill in tight spaces made him an instant idol for Barcelona fans.

Although his adventure in Barcelona was brief, his impact remains in the memory of the 'culés' fans. Romário was the main protagonist in the mythical 5-0 against Real Madrid at the Camp Nou, in which he scored a double and immortalized the 'cow's tail' to Rafa Alkorta, one of the most remembered great goals in Barça's history.

In recent years, Romário has been characterized by speaking openly about sports and political issues. On the football side, he has always defended Barça and has not hesitated to criticize their eternal rival. His statement that he would rather wear the 'albiceleste' jersey than the white 'madridista' one is a new example of his direct personality.
