Gavi and Tomás Conechny were involved in a terrifying head clash during a ball dispute and were substituted for precautionary reasons
A highly tense moment was experienced in the early stages of the match between FC Barcelona and Alavés. Just before the 10-minute mark, Gavi and Tomás Conechny jumped for an aerial ball in midfield and fell to the ground after colliding heads in a completely accidental play, generating a deafening silence in a concerned crowd due to the shocking image.
The scare was enormous in Montjuïc, where the gestures of the two players raised alarms. However, the Andalusian was able to get up and left the field on his own, and although Fermín López was already prepared to come on for him, he insisted repeatedly that he be allowed to return to the field. In contrast, the babazorro attacker, much more affected than the '6' culé, had to leave the pitch on a stretcher and was replaced by his teammate Carlos Martín.
Gavi did not want to be substituted
Despite ultimately being forced to go to the locker room, Gavi firmly refused to be substituted once he stood up. It had to be Hansi Flick who intervened to convince him that, for his own health, the best solution was to leave the match and undergo the necessary medical tests to rule out any serious setbacks given the severity of the blow.
Once removed from the match, both players were transported to the hospital by ambulance for examination, as established in the protocol. Fortunately, the blaugrana midfielder was able to get into the vehicle on his own and appeared normal, so it is expected that everything will turn out to be just a scare.
