Sergi Roberto reviews the situation of FC Barcelona, from the departure of Iñigo Martínez and the controversy with Ter Stegen to the possible arrival of Iñaki Peña to Como

Calendar of FC Barcelona

This Sunday's match between FC Barcelona and Como 1907 in the Joan Gamper Trophy 2025 will mark the temporary return of one of the names that wore the Blaugrana jersey for several seasons. This is the Reus midfielder, Sergi Roberto, who has accumulated more than 375 matches played, with 19 goals and 43 assists in his time at the club.

Taking advantage of the preview of the match against the culé team, Roberto gave an interview to the Jijantes podcast, where he showed a great closeness to the club's current affairs and spoke about several hot topics. However, he began with a nostalgic tone, admitting that he would have liked to play the Barça-Como at the Camp Nou:

"When they told me that there was an opportunity to play with Barça, above all, I was excited to return to the Camp Nou, after these years in Montjuïc, more than playing against Barça; but it couldn't be"

Iñigo Martínez's farewell and its impact on Barcelona's project

Already getting into the current affairs of the team from the Condal City, Sergi Roberto analyzed Iñigo Martínez's departure to Saudi Arabia, emphasizing how sensitive this loss is for the Blaugrana, given the Basque defender's contribution to the sports project:

"It's a very important loss. As a player, he has had an incredible season, but as a teammate he was also key. Not only as a player, but also on a personal level and in the dressing room, he is very, very important"

However, despite the loss, Sergi Roberto is confident that the Barcelona team has what it takes to replace this absence, pointing to an ideal candidate to occupy that place in the starting eleven: "I think there are options. Especially Andreas Christensen, it's great news to have him back", he added.

In turn, regarding the movements in the market related to Barcelona, Sergi Roberto also gave his opinion on the possible arrival of Iñaki Peña to Como 1907: "He is a very good goalkeeper. He showed it last year in the matches he played. For me, he is a top-level goalkeeper. With the situation that there is now in the Barça goal, perhaps it is time for him to go to another club so that he has more minutes and opportunities, since it is complicated at Barça", he warned.

Ter Stegen's complicated situation and the captaincy at the Blaugrana club

In the field of goalkeeping, the former Barça player was questioned about the current situation of Marc-André Ter Stegen, who has recently lost the captaincy and his number, in an open war with the board. "It is a very delicate situation between the club of my life and a very good friend of mine. I feel very bad that this has reached this point. I have spoken with Marc this summer, I have seen him a couple of times. Nobody would have liked this situation to be reached, but I hope it ends in the best possible way, although things are somewhat complicated", he acknowledged.

Finally, about the process of selecting captains, with knowledge of the cause, since he was the leader of the team for several seasons: "Normally, it is voted with a piece of paper that contains four names and it is deposited in an urn. Each year it has been done differently, but with Flick I don't know how it will be done", he concluded.
