At Barça, they believe Ter Stegen rushed to give an estimated time off and believe he did so to influence the registration of Joan García

Tension between FC Barcelona and goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen seems to be increasing. The German goalkeeper does not accept that they have incorporated Joan García, considering that he has been Barça's '1' for the last 9 years.

To this must be added the recent renewal of Wojciech Szczęsny, which, in principle, marginalizes him from the prominence he is accustomed to under the 'culé' goal, as he would become the third goalkeeper of the first team.

However, the anger is on both sides, since the publication of 'MATS' on social networks, in which he announced that he would be out for three months due to having to undergo surgery to resolve some ailments in his back, generated discontent in the board, according to the latest information.

Within the club, the goalkeeper's statement was not well received, as it is interpreted as a maneuver that could hinder the registration of Joan García.

Despite this, from the 'blaugrana' entity they insist that the decision on a surgical intervention was not conditioned by sporting criteria, but was left in the hands of the medical team.

Barça does not agree that Ter Stegen has publicly estimated his absence

In this argumentative order, at Barça they consider that Ter Stegen went too far in publicly stating an estimated time off, since that information corresponds exclusively to the surgeon in charge of the intervention and the club's medical services.

In any case, from the 'azulgrana' team they emphasize that any diagnosis or term must be agreed upon by the professionals in the area involved.

Therefore, from Barça they interpret that the movement of the '1' responds to an intention to directly influence the registration of Joan García, due to the fact that his condition as injured would be used in case it is considered long-term.

However, they recall that this type of determination does not depend on the player or the club, but must be evaluated and approved by a medical tribunal of LaLiga, as happened last summer with the case of Andreas Christensen, which allowed the registration of Dani Olmo.

In addition, the club also commented on the idea of making a joint statement. However, 'MATS' decided to publish his one hour before, leaving Barcelona aside.

Ter Stegen, disappointed with Barça after feeling undervalued

In this context, Ter Stegen renewed his contract in 2023 until 2028. His link with the Catalan club initially expired in 2025, but with his renewal the deferral of his salary in the last three years of contract came into play.

Therefore, Barcelona is expected to pay the Mönchengladbach-born goalkeeper a total of 42 million euros between now and 2028. Of course, bonuses and prize money will have to be taken into account.

Considering this fact and the arrival of García and extension of Szczęsny's contract, the player would not only feel betrayed by Barcelona, but also disappointed, since he believes he has done everything possible to help the club due to the difficult economic situation. In addition, the Catalan team would be considering removing the captain's armband.

Likewise, the goalkeeper currently has a gross salary of around 12 million annually, which ends up becoming around 7 million net per year, and would be one of the highest paid in the Barça team.
