Imminent departure?: Ter Stegen trains apart from the Barça squad

Hansi Flick has left Ter Stegen out of the squad at the start of Barça's preseason. The coach has already made it clear to the goalkeeper that he should look for a team for the 25/26 season.

Calendar of FC Barcelona

This Monday, FC Barcelona started its preseason with the entire first-team squad available, except for three exceptions due to injury. Gerard Martín, Marc Bernal and Dani Rodríguez have done special work apart from the group, while they receive medical discharge. However, there was another notable absence in the first session of the summer.

Several media confirmed the absence of Marc-André ter Stegen in the squad, although the German is in perfect physical condition after reappearing with Barça and the German national team between May and June last.

The '1' stayed working alone in the gym, probably by order of Hansi Flick, since the captain has not suffered any physical discomfort that prevents him from training normally. At least, none confirmed by the club's doctors after the tests carried out on the entire squad on Sunday.

Why doesn't Flick want Ter Stegen? The coach's reasons

In that sense, Flick seems to have already made it clear to Ter Stegen that he will not have him next season and, probably, the goalkeeper has not taken it well. The reasons are clear: with the signing of Joan García and the renewal of Wojciech Szczesny, the Catalan starts the 25/26 season as the starter and the Pole as his substitute. The third goalkeeper would be Diego Kochen, from the reserve team.

The other fixed discards for the 25/26 season, Iñaki Peña, Pau Víctor and Oriol Romeu did train normally on the field, beyond having their days numbered at the club.

On the other hand, the Barça captain had to train alone in the gym on the first day of the ten days of continuous work that the coaching staff has planned. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday there will be a double session (morning and afternoon), while the rest of the days they will work in a single shift.

Barça will leave for the Asian continent on July 24 and, if Marc-André continues working on the sidelines, logically he will not be part of the tour of Japan and South Korea. This would strain the rope much more between the '1' and the board, but at the same time forces him to look for a team for the 25/26 season.

Barça plans to give the '1' to Joan García in August

For now, Galatasaray, Manchester City, Manchester United and Inter Milan have been mentioned as possible destinations for the 33-year-old goalkeeper, although the only concrete offer that the Mönchengladbach native has received is from the Turkish team.

Ter Stegen still has a contract with Barcelona for three more years and still has to receive the bulk of his salary, set at approximately 14 million gross per year after his last renewal (2023). With Joan García and Wojciech Szczesny in the squad, the German has lost not only his starting position, but also his place in the team.

In fact, the club's idea is to give the '1' to the former Espanyol goalkeeper once he resolves his registration in LaLiga. For now, both the Catalan and the Pole are out of the official squad, the latter after renewing his contract for two more years (the previous link culminated on June 30), but this problem will be resolved once Barça returns to rule 1:1.

As things stand, Ter Stegen's future at Can Barça could be a real 'soap opera' for the club this summer. The board plans to make at least a couple more signings, but for this it must free up salary mass and the departure of the '1' represents a key step to achieve this goal. Will Deco and Joan Laporta manage to convince him to leave amicably?
