Gavi will start the 2025/26 season with a secondary role at Barça. However, the '6' is willing to fight to earn a place among the starters
At FC Barcelona, the players who have a guaranteed place in Hansi Flick's starting XI are counted. And in this scenario, Pablo Gavi is not one of them, so the 2025/26 season will be a great challenge for the current '6' of the Blaugrana team.
The player's return after suffering a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, in addition to an injury to the lateral meniscus in November 2023, coincided in the 2024/25 season with the excellent form of Pedri and Frenkie de Jong.
Although the midfielder returned in November 2024 in the league match against Sevilla, he failed to establish himself among the starters, as the competition is not easy, since, in addition to the Canary Islander and the Dutchman, other players such as Fermín López, Marc Casadó or Dani Olmo are also ahead of him and he should keep in mind that, in principle, a secondary role awaits him in the next season.
Gavi, determined to fight for a starting place at Barça in the 25/26 season
In this context, Gavi will face the start of next season with his new reality accepted. Despite this, the '6' is willing to fight for the team every minute that coach Hansi Flick grants him.
The midfielder even values training sessions as a starting point, considering that the German coach takes into account the players' involvement in any sporting aspect.
The Spanish international would have no intention of letting another season pass in which he is not seen as a protagonist. However, the technical director highly values the competitive mentality, quality, attitude and character of the '6', something that, if accompanied by good minutes on the field, could help the player gain ground in Flick's scheme.
It is worth mentioning that, despite the fact that the 24/25 season was not the best for Gavi, the player was able to participate in 42 matches (1,688 minutes), where he was able to contribute to Barça with 3 goals and 3 assists.
The lack of prominence raises questions about Gavi's future
The midfielder's new secondary role in the Blaugrana team has raised several questions about his future. The main one is whether he would consider leaving Barça, but this, so far, is far from becoming a reality.
The player has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and Atlético de Madrid. However, Barcelona is not willing to offer facilities to any team that is interested in the '9' of 'La Roja'.
And, in fact, both the club and the player have done the work to ward off any interest. On the one hand, Barcelona would not be willing to listen to offers for the '6' unless they are for a minimum of 80 million euros.
In turn, the native of Los Palacios y Villafranca, when asked in an interview about the alleged interest of PSG in him, was blunt in his response and left no doubt about his desire to succeed at Barça.
“I am very calm. My dream and my mentality is to make my entire career at Barça", he said on that occasion.
That's how things are for Gavi, who has a contract in force with the Barcelona team until June 2030, after the extension formalized in January 2025. The agreement includes an astronomical termination clause of 1,000 'kilos'.
