With a fortuitous goal, Tottenham wins the Europa League against Manchester United at San Mamés (1-0)

Tottenham broke the spell after 17 years without official titles with the obtaining of the Europa League in San Mamés. The victory by the minimum against Manchester United (1-0) allowed Ange Postecoglou's team to keep a trophy they had not won since 1984.

A goal by Brennan Johnson in the 42nd minute, which was actually scored in his own net by Luke Shaw, was enough for the 'Spurs' to win a rather dull match at Athletic's ground.

Both teams were looking to save the season after a disastrous year in the Premier League and, finally, the glory went to a Tottenham side that didn't even shoot on target throughout the match, but still managed to take the trophy.

In the duel between the sixteenth and seventeenth placed teams in the English league, the London team was slightly better in a first half practically without clear chances in both areas. Before the break, a cross from the left by Pape Sarr found Brennan Johnson in a good position to finish.

The midfielder, however, did not fully impact the ball, but it was deflected by Luke Shaw and ended up sneaking into the goal defended by Onana. After the break, United took control of the match, but never found clarity to hurt a Tottenham side totally retreated in their own half.

In fact, Postecoglou's side had some counter-attacks to extend the lead, but in the final 20 minutes the siege of the 'red devils' was total. The clearest chances came in the 68th and 72nd minutes, with two headers from Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes that were miraculously not goals.

The first was cleared by Van de Ven on the goal line, while the second went wide despite the fact that the Portuguese was unmarked and with the entire goal at his disposal to finish. Towards the end, Vicario cleared another good header from Shaw to keep the clean sheet and give Tottenham their fourth European title.

Third Europa League for a Tottenham side that will make history in the Champions League

The 'Spurs' won the Europa League in 1972 and 1984, in addition to the extinct UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1963. The last time the club lifted an official trophy was in 2007/08, in the final of the English League Cup against Chelsea (2-1).

In addition, lifting the trophy at San Mamés allows the London team to return to the Champions League despite finishing the Premier League close to the relegation places. This will be the first time a team has played in the tournament after finishing lower than 15th place in their domestic league.

Manchester United, meanwhile, add their second defeat in UEL finals, after the defeat against Villarreal in 2021 (1-1, 11-10 p.). Despite the arrival of Rúben Amorim, the 'Red devils' completed a shameful season and, for the first time since 14/15, will not play in European competitions in the coming year.
