Hansi Flick was self-critical despite Barça's thrashing of Mallorca (0-3). The coach, despite the victory, was not happy with the team's performance.
FC Barcelona debuted in LaLiga EA Sports 2025/26 with a thrashing against Mallorca (0-3), in a match where the Blaugrana team was already winning by two goals in the 21st minute and, from the 39th minute, had two more players on the field.
The expulsions of Manu Morlanes and Vedat Muriqi left the Balearic team totally exposed, but Barça only closed the scoring in the fourth minute of added time, with a great goal from Lamine Yamal. In that sense, Hansi Flick said he was unhappy with the team's performance.
Beyond the thrashing, the coach gave his players a warning, criticizing the excessive relaxation in the final stretch of the first half and, practically, the entire second half. Leo Román had a couple of remarkable saves against Dani Olmo and Pedri, but the team certainly lowered the intensity considerably when they saw themselves with such a sporting advantage.
Flick: "I didn't like the match, the team played at 50%"
"I didn't like the match. They are three important points, but I didn't like it. After 2-0 and two red cards, I think the team played at 50% and I didn't like it. We can do better", the Barça coach began by saying after the end of the match.
In that sense, he pointed directly at the players. "I don't like them relaxing. We had to control the ball and the game. You have to score. Playing at 50 or 60 percent, against 9, is not possible. We have to play faster. We have to improve some situations", Flick pointed out.
Barça closed the match with 72% possession, 24 shots (8 on goal) and 3 goals. Although the team maintains the brutal scoring average of the previous year (3 goals per match), the coaching staff does not allow taking their foot off the accelerator. There are no excuses, especially against a always tough rival like the Balearic team.
The controversy of Ferran's goal, the formation of the XI and Lamine: Flick reveals the keys to the thrashing
On the other hand, Hansi Flick spoke about the controversy related to Ferran Torres' goal in the first half. Mallorca expected the main referee José Luis Munuera to stop the match because Antonio Raíllo was lying on the grass after deflecting a long-range shot from Lamine Yamal with his head.
However, the referee allowed the action to continue, assuming that the defender only had a slight blow. The 'Shark' got one of the rebounds and scored with a powerful right-footed shot from the edge of the area for the partial 0-2.
"I tell the team that we have to play until the referee stops the match. It is a refereeing decision and we have to accept it. If I were on the other side I wouldn't be happy. But I tell them that you have to stop when the referee stops. They must be focused and continue until the end. It's a goal", the German coach clarified.
In turn, the coach explained his reasons for betting on Eric García from the start. As in the Gamper, the player from Martorell was a starter instead of Jules Koundé. The Frenchman only played 11 minutes, entering in the final stretch for Raphinha.
"(Eric) played very well in the preseason, he deserved to play. In all positions, we have great quality. We have talked and we have decided that he would play. He also played very well at the end of last season. Koundé is also at a good level", he explained regarding the right back.
Finally, Flick praised Lamine Yamal. The '10' made his debut with a goal and an assist, being the first time he has managed to score on matchday 1 of La Liga. "The important thing is that he plays with this high level. He is special and everyone looks at him. He is very motivated, he is always willing to press. Everyone sees that he is exceptional", added the coach.
