No one could guarantee Christensen prominence and continuity at Barça, but the player wants to stay. The Azulgrana team has up to five top-level centre-backs.
The Danish defender Andreas Christensen reported this Wednesday, July 2nd, at the Ciutat Esportiva to start training for the pre-season of FC Barcelona, which starts on July 13th.
Christensen decided to cut short his holidays, in what appears to be a declaration of intent to continue wearing the Azulgrana shirt after his name was surrounded by a sea of rumors about a possible departure in recent weeks.
Although the player wants to demonstrate his firm commitment to Barcelona, his continuity in the Azulgrana team would not be assured. Thus, Andreas would enter the list of 'expendable' players.
Christensen's clear objective: regain his level and stay at Barça
According to the latest rumors, the 29-year-old central defender's desire is to fulfill his entire contract as a Barça player, as well as regain his level, as injuries sidelined him during the 2024/25 season.
The player has a contract with Barcelona until June 2026 with a release clause of 500 million euros. However, the overpopulation in the Blaugrana's defensive zone could leave '15' without prominence.
Andreas was only able to play 256 minutes with Barça in the 2024/25 season. The central defender's participation in the recent season was only testimonial, unlike the 2023/23 season in which he played 3,334 minutes in 32 matches and the 2023/24 season in which he participated in 2,790 minutes in 42 matches.
Christensen's future, up in the air
Although the player is not interested in leaving the club, nothing could assure him that he is non-transferable, as Barça has four other top-level centre-backs in the defensive zone, such as Pau Cubarsí, Íñigo Martínez, Ronald Araujo and Eric García.
For his part, the club's sporting director, Deco, sent a message with clear intentions to make the 'expendables' understand that they must look for a team; in the defensive zone, the one pointed out could be Christensen.
"We have five centre-backs and one must leave, due to an excess of players. The coach has to make decisions."
According to Transfermarkt, the defender has a value of 12 million euros, but an operation for him could be closed at around '15 kilos', money that would fall very well in the club's coffers, which seeks to continue making money.
The latest rumors indicate that both Al-Nassr of the Saudi Pro League and AC Milan sounded out the player, but so far everything seems to be stalled due to the player's desire to continue at Camp Barça.
