Ousmane Dembélé and PSG won the European Super Cup in Italy on Wednesday. What is the value of this title in the fight for the Ballon d'Or?
Paris Saint-Germain came back against Tottenham (2-2, 4-3 on penalties) to win the European Super Cup title. Luis Enrique's team forced the penalty shootout thanks to a goal from Gonçalo Ramos in the 90+4', the latter assisted by Ousmane Dembélé. The Vernon native had a fairly discreet match, but was a figure at the end.
And, in addition to his assist, the 'Mosquito' scored the third penalty of the shootout, a key shot that allowed the current Champions champion to equalize the shootout after three opportunities per side. In the end, Mathys Tel's failure and Nuno Mendes' success in the fifth of the shootout gave PSG their first European Super Cup.
Fifth title for Dembélé in 2025: Closer to the Ballon d'Or?
In this way, the Parisian team added its fifth trophy so far this year, just one away from the historic sextuple that FC Barcelona won in 2009. Luis Enrique's team started the year by lifting the French Super Cup. Afterwards, they once again won the league and cup in their country before crushing Inter Milan in the Champions League final (5-0).
To reach six titles in the calendar year, Paris must win the Intercontinental Cup on December 17. Bayern Munich also won the sextuple in 2019/20, but not in 12 consecutive months. The Club World Cup that year was played in February 2021 due to the covid-19 pandemic.
In that sense, Dembélé continues to expand his personal record, as well as the favoritism in his country to become the second Ballon d'Or of the decade. 'Dembouz' hopes to repeat what Karim Benzema did in 2022, becoming the eighth Gaul to win the award that 'France Football' has presented annually since 1956.
The Ballon d'Or only takes into account the records of 24/25
However, beyond the title in the European Super Cup, the Ballon d'Or only takes into consideration the record and statistics of the concluded season, in this case 24/25. In case of having lifted the Club World Cup, this trophy would have had weight for the 'Mosquito' in the vote for the award that will be presented on September 22.
In total, Ousmane closed 24/25 with 35 goals and 16 assists in 54 games, winning four titles with Paris. These were: Ligue 1, Coupe de France, French Super Cup and Champions League.
For their part, Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Pedri and Robert Lewandowski, finalists for the award as representatives of Barça, add three trophies to their record (League, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup).
In terms of individual records, Rafa surpasses those of 'Dembouz' with 34 goals and 23 assists in 57 games. The Brazilian was MVP of LaLiga and Pichichi of the Champions League, with 13 goals. Currently, Lamine is emerging as a favorite, although his statistics are less impressive than those of the '11' culé.
The Mataró native closed the season with 18 goals and 23 assists, being the assist leader of LaLiga with just 17 years. In addition, he was runner-up in the Nations League with Spain. For PSG, Vitinha and Nuno Mendes are also nominated for the Ballon d'Or, both with five titles in their record thanks to the victory against La Roja with Portugal in the Nations.
