The 28-year-old Portuguese Liverpool forward and his brother die after the vehicle caught fire on the A-52
Diogo Jota, Portuguese forward of Liverpool and recent champion of the Premier League, has died this morning in a traffic accident at kilometer 65 of the A-52, in the Zamora region of Sanabria, along with his brother André, a footballer for Penafiel. The vehicle suffered a road departure and caught fire, leaving the sports world perplexed.

Accident on the A-52 and initial investigations
The incident occurred in the direction towards Benavente, when the car —driven, according to witnesses, at a moderate speed— apparently suffered a blowout of one of its tires. The road departure triggered an instant fire that engulfed the car and the nearby vegetation, forcing 112 to mobilize firefighters and emergency services. Despite their rapid action, the two occupants lost their lives.
Trajectory and achievements of Diogo Jota
With a transfer of 44.7 million euros in 2020, Jota arrived at Liverpool from Wolverhampton. In 182 matches with the 'Reds' he scored 65 goals and distributed 26 assists, lifting three trophies: the 2024-25 Premier League, the 2021-22 FA Cup and the 2021-22 League Cup. His career summarized contrasts: from promise in Paços de Ferreira to stardom at Anfield, a path as vertiginous as a lethal counterattack.
Personal life: an ephemeral love like a summer
Just ten days ago, on June 22, Diogo Jota married his fiancée, Rute Cardoso, in a wedding where they posed happily with their three children —Denis (2021), Duarte (2023) and the little one born in 2024—. That moment of family light contrasts tragically with the darkness of the early morning of the accident.

Reactions in Portugal and the world of football
The shock has been enormous in the Portuguese country. FC Porto and the Portuguese Federation have expressed their condolences, remembering two youth players trained in the city of rainy winters and afternoons of ball. On social media, fans and teammates compare the news to a missed penalty in the last breath: a blow impossible to digest.
