Barça, with an impressive streak, prepares for a decisive clash at the Metropolitano
Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona face off this Sunday at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano for matchday 28 of LaLiga EA Sports. In a true title final, both teams arrive separated by just one point in the table, although Barça can extend their lead to four over the 'colchoneros' if they secure another victory in the postponed match against Osasuna.
For the azulgrana team, this will be their seventh visit to the new 'rojiblanco' stadium, a ground where they have maintained a positive record so far, and they arrive with an unbeaten streak of 17 matches in all competitions. Atleti definitively left the Vicente Calderón in the summer of 2017 and Barcelona did not have to wait long to learn the new home of the team managed by Diego Simeone.

Barça, unbeaten in their first three visits to Atlético
On matchday 8 of LaLiga 17/18, the Catalans drew (1-1) at the Metropolitano, thanks to a goal from Luis Suárez in the 82nd minute. Saúl Ñíguez had put the hosts ahead in the first half. The following season, Ernesto Valverde's side added another draw with the same score (1-1). Ousmane Dembélé equalized in the 90th minute after Diego Costa had scored 13 minutes earlier.
Both leagues ended up in the trophy cabinets of a Barça that, in 19/20, achieved their first victory at the then 'Wanda' (0-1) thanks to a goal from Leo Messi in the 86th minute. After that, they would begin a desert crossing that saw the azulgrana side wait four years to win LaLiga again. In the 20/21 and 21/22 seasons, the 'Cholo' defended their home with victories (1-0 and 2-0) against the team then managed by Ronald Koeman.
Barça won without conceding goals in their last two visits to Atlético
The culés won again at the Metropolitano on their way to the league title in 22/23, thanks to a goal from Dembélé in the 17th minute (0-1) and, last season, the Catalan victory was much more convincing (0-3). Joao Félix, Robert Lewandowski, and Fermín López scored for Xavi Hernández's side in the match played exactly one year ago, on March 17, 2024, for matchday 29 of a league that ended up in the trophy cabinet of Real Madrid.
Thus, Barça's record at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano is 3 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses in 7 matches, with a total of 7 goals for and 5 against. Since Atleti moved to the revamped Estadio de La Peineta, the Catalans have won three leagues (2017/18, 2018/19, 2022/23) and the 'colchoneros' only one (2020/21). Real Madrid, for their part, took the other three titles (2019/20, 2021/22, and 2023/24).
